Martha spent the weekend getting settled into her Cardiff flat, thinking about how weird it was to have two flats now: one in London and one in Cardiff. But it made more sense to have a flat here, now she was UNIT's official liaison officer with Torchwood and would be in Cardiff half the week, than to stay in hotels.

As she finished unpacking her clothes and putting it in the right places, she thought back to the meeting she'd had with Jack, Colonel Mace and Brigadier Chaudhry a few days after the TARDIS had towed the Earth back home. Jack had turned on the famous Harkness charm and as a result, the Brigadier had quite readily agreed to his suggestion that the two organisations work more closely together in the hope that situations like the one with Davros would not arise, or would be nipped in the bud that much sooner.

While at UNIT Martha would continue to work as the Medical Director on Project Indigo; the work had been brought back to London since so many personnel and so much equipment had been lost in the Daleks' raid on the New York HQ. While at Torchwood, Martha would work as their medical officer, but Jack had promised to recruit a new medical officer to work in Cardiff full time.

Martha had just decided that everything was where it should be, and that food was the next item on the agenda, when her doorbell rang. Martha made her way to the front door with a half smile on her face: she was prepared to bet that her caller was Captain Jack, and sure enough, when she peered through the spy hole in the door, she saw him standing on the landing outside.

"Hello Jack," she said, opening the door to him.

"Martha Jones, how's my sweet nightingale?" he asked, sweeping in and wrapping her in a tight hug.

"Bit breathless, actually," she gasped.

"Sorry sweetheart." He released her, then dipped his head to kiss her on the mouth.

"Jack!" she protested, half-heartedly.

"I know, I know, you're an engaged woman." He sighed theatrically, then grinned at her. "Come on, Dr Jones, I'm taking you out to dinner, can't have you eating alone on your first night here."

"I need a shower and a change of clothes if I'm going out to eat," she told him.

He waggled his eyebrows at her. "Need any help with that?"

"Behave!" she scolded, laughing nonetheless. "Go watch TV or something." She gestured to the sitting room.

"Sure I can't come and watch you?" he asked.

"Jack Harkness, stop it!" He winked at her, then wandered into her sitting room, so she headed to the bathroom.

Half an hour later they were entering Jack's favourite restaurant in the Bay and sitting down to order.

"So, how does it feel to be a Liaison Officer?" he asked, as the waiter went away with their orders.

Martha shrugged. "No different to being a Medical Officer, or a Medical Director for that matter. I'm still just me."

He reached across the table and twined his fingers in hers as she fiddled with her fork. "You're someone special, though, for all you're 'just' you."

She flushed and ducked her head embarrassed, as always, by compliments.

"I mean it, Martha," Jack persisted. "Our first meeting was out at the end of the universe, you kissing me - " he caught her look, "okay, you giving me CPR. You struck me then as someone extraordinary, and nothing you've done since has changed my mind on that." He squeezed her fingers. "In fact, you've gone on to reinforce the impression constantly. And don't forget, you're the first Liaison Officer in Torchwood's 130 year history. This is a new beginning for you, and for us and UNIT, and I can't think of anyone better suited to the role."

"Thanks." Martha changed the subject quickly, before he could continue, and he let her, knowing she wouldn't thank him for continuing to embarrass her.

They shared an enjoyable meal, talking about the Doctor, and about Sarah Jane and her teenage friends.

"I think the Doctor's hoping to poach one of the teenagers when they're 18," Martha told him. "I imagine that Sarah Jane's going to have something to say to that, though."

Jack laughed. "I wouldn't mind recruiting them myself, but I'm rather attached to my limbs, so I've refrained from saying anything."

"Coward," she teased.

He stuck his tongue out at her, then signalled to the waiter for the bill.

They walked back to Martha's flat arm in arm, making small talk about her family and his other two team members.

"I thought you might have recruited Mickey," she said as she let them into her flat.

"I did try," Jack admitted, "especially when I found out he's a competent hacker, but he wasn't interested. I may win him over yet though."

"One thing no one will ever accuse you of, Jack Harkness, is lack of persistence." Martha headed into the kitchen to make them some coffee. He grinned as he followed her, knowing she liked his persistence.

A few minutes later they were settled on Martha's sofa, mugs of coffee on the table in front of them, as she snuggled up against him to watch the late evening news, and Jack couldn't help thinking that he could easily get used to this. To new beginnings, he thought.
