As he tried to override the security access on the computer, the Doctor found himself wondering just who this woman, Professor River Song, was; her words about life with a time-traveller being hard work hinted that she was a future companion, now time-travelling independently of him. The fact that her diary looked like the TARDIS strengthened that possibility, and at the same time baffled him.

He barely refrained from touching his cheek where she'd cupped it in her hand just a few moments ago; her touch had spoken of warmth, affection, a shared intimacy, even, and he felt unnerved at the idea. It had been a long time since he'd allowed anyone to get that close to him, and he didn't enjoy being reminded of what he'd lost: it was too painful, almost unbearable.

He felt as off-kilter as when Jenny had stepped from that progenation machine on Messaline and called him 'dad' - and look how that had turned out. He'd lost Jenny before he could get to know her properly, when he'd barely accepted that she really was his daughter. He didn't want to face that kind of pain again and he resolved that he would find out from this River Song just who she was and what she meant to his future self.

And if I don't like what I hear, I shall ensure it doesn’t happen, he resolved, his face set in lines of determination.

A moment later he found himself looking at a small girl and his attention snapped back to the situation at hand.
