Listening to New Who - Pest Control Reaction Post

May 31, 2008 16:48

I started listening to Peter Anghelides' Pest Control last weekend, but got interrupted, so I went back to it, from the beginning, yesterday - and I rather wished I hadn't.

In this exclusive audio story The Doctor and Donna face monstrous insects, centaurs, and a ruthless robot exterminator. After they land on a distant planet in the middle of a battle, the TARDIS is driven away in the back of the lorry in which it landed. When the Doctor sets off in hot pursuit, riding a borrowed motorbike, Donna is left behind and finds herself accepting a commission in the Pioneer Corps. However, something is transforming soldiers into monstrous beetles, and she could be the next victim. Whilst he's chasing the TARDIS, the Doctor is captured by the centaur race and jailed, but some of the centaur race's human prisoner are transformed into gigantic insects.

Then the brutal, remorseless robot exterminator arrives, bent on wiping out the insects. It may be that nothing can stop it, because this robot's solution for the infestation is very simple: kill everything.

Can the Doctor broker a peace between the warring humans and centaurs, stop the robot, and prevent any more people being turned into insects?

Well yeah, 'cos he IS the Doctor and it's what he does. Unfortunately I found this story really hard going (despite David Tennant's fantastic range of voices for all the characters). I took a two hour break part way through listening to it because I lost interest, and then forced myself to listen to the last half hour.

I'm afraid to say it's not a story I'd recommend.
