Tolkien Day!

This one's a classic quote...it's found in the back cover of the Letters but i just like it so much so i'll post it in here too. :)

”If you wanted to go on from the end of ‘The Hobbit’ I think the ring would be your inevitable choice as the link. If then you wanted a large tale, the Ring would at once acquire a capital letter; and the Dark Lord ( Read more... )

Strider sitting in the corner of the inn was a shock, and I had no more idea who he was than Frodo did.

Isn't that amazing? Aragorn, heir of Isildur, turned out to be crucial to the entire story from that point on.

Amazing how he's actually the king that would rule over the Gondor and the North...
I just also love that Aragorn's name used to be Trotter! That cracks me up everytime i think of it. lol Imagine Trotter instead of Strider....
:D

I love this quote because I like the fact that Tolkien didn't have everything all nicely mapped out when he began writing. It's fun to imagine him being surprised by some of the characters and happenings as he wrote.

I love it when a story has a mind of its own!

I remember reading that Tolkien was stuck for a while when he got to some part-- he really did spend a lot of time perfecting this epic as shown by the amount of time (12 years) that he spent on it... seriously it was his "life-blood"...
It's cool to read that some parts of the story he didn't know and came easily yet others he had to struggle with. If i'm not mistaken, he was stuck on how to resolve Mt. Doom and at the time where the FEllowship got to MOria. :)

makes it easier, doesnt' it? =)

I love this letter - the way the story grew out of hand and that Tolkien didn't know himself who he was meeting or where he was going until he got there. I can SO relate to that

i'm glad you like this letter, dear! And when Tolkien writes about his process, i feel like a lot of authors can relate to-- meaning that he's not so different from all of us yet with his philological ability really enabled him to make such a wonderful realistic fantasy world for us to enjoy. :)

That's fantastic! Makes me want to read the story all over again (and I only just finished... again!)

There never was (and there never will be) a better tale than The Lord of the Rings.

*bounces* I too can sooo relate to the tale writing itself. But with Tolkien's tales, it just boggles my mind how it all came together so perfectly! It is such an intricate story that meshes like a fine mithril shirt; each ringlet perfectly in line with the others to create a magnificent and kingly gift. ;)

Tis belated, but...Happy Birthday dear, Ranger! *sighs*
