This one's a classic quote...it's found in the back cover of the Letters but i just like it so much so i'll post it in here too. :)
”If you wanted to go on from the end of ‘The Hobbit’ I think the ring would be your inevitable choice as the link. If then you wanted a large tale, the Ring would at once acquire a capital letter; and the Dark Lord would immediately appear. As he did, unasked, on the hearth at Bag End as soon as I came to that point. So the essential Quest started at once. But I met a lot of things along the way that astonished me. Tom Bombadil I knew already; but I had never been to Bree. Strider sitting in the corner of the inn was a shock, and I had no more idea who he was than Frodo did. The Mines of Moria had been a mere name; and of Lothlorien no word had reached my mortal ears till I came here.”
~Letter 163 to WH Auden, June 1955
I just love the idea of Tolkien really discovering a lot as he wrote this epic... tells us that indeed, some plot ideas are there and not yet known by us on how they connect in the story yet they're there for us to figure out why they're important. :)
And today is Aragorn's birthday...!(which i mentioned to mom today and she just gave a shake of her head in exasperation ) lol
Happy Birthday, my dear King!
(I would've put a quote from the Letters that Tolkien said about him but I can't seem to find a fitting quote... there doesnt' seem to be long letters/passages about Aragorn (like not ones that Frodo has about the failure bit about his Quest or people questioning of his decision at Mt. Doom...) There is an interesting one about the etymology of his name but then there's a lot of footnotes of it too and i feel like i need to post it in context if i were to do it... maybe next week... ;)
...
