Almost all 'Master and Commander' fic is written, like the books, in the third person. How about some fic in the first person, so we get all the thoughts first-hand and unmediated? You can pick the character and scene!

This double-drabble is not actually the oakum but AU. I post it, because it is written in the first person. My muses has played around with the thought that Stephen and Jack ended up together at the very night they met.

Stephen's New Spring

In Master and Commander there's no mention at all of any intelligence-work. Then, rather suddenly, Stephen is up to his ears in skulduggery. How and when and by whom did he get roped in?

Even in the dark Stephen would not have missed this path. It wound up, crossing and recrossing the stream, its steps kept open by the odd fisherman after crayfish, the impotent men going to bathe in the pool and by a few other travellers; and his hand reached out of itself for the branch that would help him over a deep place - a branch polished by many hands.
