Almost all 'Master and Commander' fic is written, like the books, in the third person. How about some fic in the first person, so we get all the thoughts first-hand and unmediated? You can pick the character and scene!

This double-drabble is not actually the oakum but AU. I post it, because it is written in the first person. My muses has played around with the thought that Stephen and Jack ended up together at the very night they met.

Stephen's New Spring

Stephen Maturin:I cannot sleep. I sit here and wait for the dawn, feeling a stranger to my own body. I am naked, just as the man who now sleeps in my bed. I look at him, wondering how he mere hours ago changed the course of my destiny ( ... )

Love at first sight is just what we wish for Jack and Stephen. Thank you. :D

Thank you also for filling this request, even when it was more AU than oakum.

Alone on a Hill at Night - Master and Commander, Chapter 12 anonymous February 3 2012, 13:29:09 UTC
After a while some of the lanterns began to go down; others remained, and some even climbed higher still; Jack and Stephen stayed where they were. Dawn found them under their rock, with Jack steadily sweeping the Gut - calm now, and deserted - and Stephen Maturin fast asleep, smiling.
Master & Commander Chapter 12

So... what did Jack do that made Stephen smile??

To the tune of The Beatles: Fool on the Hill

Night after Night

Night after Night,
Alone on a hill,
Two men sweep the Gut and are keeping perfectly still
Nobody ever hears them,
When they speak of their feelings true,
So they never have to answer,

And two lovers on the hill,
See the sun going down,
And the kisses they share,
Make their world spin around.

Well on the way,
Head in a cloud,
The man of a thousand birds is talking perfectly loud
But it’s only Jack who hears him,
And who loves Stephen call his name,
His words always seem to tell him,

Of two lovers on the hill,
who see the sun going down,
And the kisses they share,
Make their world spin around.

Nobody ever hears them,
When they speak of their love so true,
And Stephen sleeps and he’s smiling

And two lovers on the hill,
Saw the sun going down,
And the kisses they shared,
Made their world spin around.

How utterly lovely! I adore this.

The man of a thousand birds is talking perfectly loud
*nods*
Yes, that is Stephen to a tee.
A beautiful fill to my prompt, so thank you.

In Master and Commander there's no mention at all of any intelligence-work. Then, rather suddenly, Stephen is up to his ears in skulduggery. How and when and by whom did he get roped in?

Please note that this fic contains excerpts from MC and TGS, The quotes are in italics and, like Jack and Stephen, belong to Patrick O’Brian

Even in the dark Stephen would not have missed this path. It wound up, crossing and recrossing the stream, its steps kept open by the odd fisherman after crayfish, the impotent men going to bathe in the pool and by a few other travellers; and his hand reached out of itself for the branch that would help him over a deep place - a branch polished by many hands. Up and up: and the warm air sighing through the pines. He watched the boats below for a while and then sat down by a great stone. The friend had been a mere pretext for this retreat into the country.

He smiled; the conversation with Aubrey about fresh water had offered him the perfect opportunity to leave the ship for a few hours without arousing suspicion. Not that he had anything to hide, but Sophie was small and cramped and he had been missing the wide open spaces and the solitude of the countryside for some time. The commander had ( ... )

A few days would surely pass before Sophie returned, so Stephen felt he might as well make the most of his free time by going to Tarragona, where several members of his large and sprawling Catalan family and various acquaintances lived. His mind made up, he put the stone into his bag and walked briskly away from the ruins towards the road leading into the large city. The morning air shimmered around him, already distorting the lines of the horizon ( ... )

He thought about it again as he went to bed. He had been away for years and they did not know if he was to be trusted. Maybe he was being too suspicious only because his feelings were tainted by the time he had been concerned in the Irish rising almost three years ago, together with his family and friends on the island? His thoughts became muddled just before sleep claimed him ( ... )

It is the morning of Jack and Sophie's wedding and Stephen once more proves himself to be the truest and best of friends to them both.

Disclaimer: All major characters belong to Mr Patrick O'Brian, I have merely borrowed them for the morning.

Rating: Pretty much G although there is some non-explicit talk of what happens on wedding nights.

Spoilers: HUGE major spoilers for the end of HMS Surprise! If you haven't read it and you don't want to know what happens, don't read this.
