Red Families Blue FamilieswalterwzJune 28 2009, 23:55:20 UTC
I think the secret to successful functional family relationships are no expectations. This is not low expectations. Family is where unconditional love and acceptance is really put to the test.
In my family, though all efforts were made to limit my bad influence, the younger generation has far surpassed me. Life just does not fit into the nice little boxes of white picket fences the wife the 2.1 kids and dog.
The main cause of my unpopularity might simply come down to the fact that I'm boring.

That is so true. Not the part of your being boring, but the first part about families. Everyone in my family knows I'm gay, but no one is willing to talk about it, and often afraid I will bring it up. And they seem to think my flirting with religion was just an aberration - certainly something that didn't fit into their world. We don't even get into politics. It's sort of like walking through a mine field when it comes to topics that can or can't be brought up. It's very tiring to be around them.
I doubt that you are boring (I've had that accusation thrown at me, too) - but maybe more intense than others might be comfortable with - or interested in things they don't understand or care about. That's their problem.
I think a quiet dinner with you would be ideal companionship, but I might be a little intimidated about whether I could keep up. That's my problem.
I'm always a little apprehensive about visiting my family. There is very little connection between their lives and mine, and they mostly don't want to know about mine.
Same with me, Ed!
I'm glad to hear that accupuncture has been helpful. I have never tried it, but might consider it for some problems.
Thanks, Glen. I'm glad to be going and to be returning after about 5 days. That's maybe about 2 days longer that I'll like, but one never knows.
I heartily recommend acupuncture - as long as it's with or under the supervision of a trained professional. It does wonders. Sometimes it doesn't even have to be for a specific problem. I went for some arthritis in one of my index fingers. That was fixed almost immediately, and then we went from there. And it helps, but isn't necessary, that the person sticking needles in you is cute.
Thanks, Ed, my world is OK for now, no major news to report.
When I had chiropractic care some years ago, I went to the student clinic of a chiropractic school. My intern was adorable! If only I could get adorable young men to manipulate my body for free! ...I'd never need a doctor again!! ;-)
Today marks the 40th anniversary of Stonewall. I am honored to have a friend who was actually there!! Ninty percent of the people at last week's Gay Pride parade here had not been born yet! I know I have read your account of that night 40 years ago, but would love to read it again if you can provide the link. :-)
You all are at the top of my list - once I have the family visit out of the way. However, no more vacation time for me for awhile - the project I'm a supervisor on starts in August and runs probably through December - non-stop. After that...should be 'bout time for Next Time.
