I don't know about mapmakers, but my father is currently returning to his on-off hobby of genealogy, and looking at 19th century censuses (some of which may have been filled out with Welsh speakers, but the majority of which--probably not). The spelling on the censuses themselves are quite accurate, but the renditions on the computer databases (compiled by people from where, I wonder?) are way out, to the point where using an online search engine for anything Welsh is practically impossible.
OCR software is a PITA. Even on printed books - if the typeface is even slightly worn, or a funny font or anything, it makes gobbledegook. It's bad enough in English, I daren't think what it's like for census forms in Welsh. They ought to get a human to double check it, but you can imagine how tedious a job that is...
Wow, and they look at the license for, like, 0,987 seconds because anything else would be a waste of time? Pfftt... cops - they´re the same in every country!
I know. Anyway, aren't the police meant to ask drivers for their name and check it's the same as on the licence? Are Poles in Ireland really that hard to understand?
Did you knowingly choose two of Wells's lexical set keywords there (face and palm)?. I suspect not but I am seeing everything through accents of English eyes at the moment :D
Helo, btw. Sut wyt ti? Dw i'n licio Llundain ond dw i ddim yn medru stop being tired all the time. Miss you all :(
Yes, we have house! Only properly moving in tonight. It's about 1 hr from work, but I am learning to love the bus. And it's great to read the paper cover to cover each day as well actually -- I feel quite informed.
