Is it me, or was a perfectly decent anti-weapons protest undermined by PETA-style objectivisation of women? (The protest dates from 2007, but I was blissfully unaware of it then.)

I don't think you can be a pacifist without fighting oppression on all fronts. I certainly don't think you can use one kind of oppression to oppose another kind. It just ( Read more... )

I don't think I view that outfit as 'oppression', I think it an ironical nod to old space-age movie type image that they were trying to create. An appropriate costume in fact.

They were using humour to gain attention for what for them was a subject that needed attention. I don't think any outfit inherently oppressive, I think woman should be allowed to wear whatever they feel comfortable with, and if that is red hot pants or a baggy cardy then fine. And if a protestor wants to use imagary or costumes to gain attention for their cause...thats their call.

on closer inspection may be she's not meant to be a sexy alien in front of futuristic technology...

May be shes just wearing a tarty outfit...

Well its still not oppression, its what she chose to wear, and until we know the reasons behind her choice we can not say it is a result of oppression.

Yes, it can. But it can hurt more not to try. For myself, I think opting out is not an option - although I took a very lengthy moral sabbatical (possibly necessary, as the etamology might suggest).
