Perhaps this is missing the point about material things not making you happier in the long run, but since I think that making things yourself is more fulfilling than buying them anyway... the folding screen for your room seems like it would be pretty easy to make. Some scrap wood and a few hinges (ok, you might have to buy those, but you also might be able to find some for free) would make a pretty decent frame, and I happen to have a roll of shoji paper laying around at school that you could use for making the panels. Or if you have some scrap fabric that could be made into quilty panels, I bet that would look pretty spiffy, and it would give you something to do with your sewing machine that would not involve buying patterns.
