And there's that. I suspect that they are using religious images as metaphor. As far as I can tell, no one in the writing/producing is actually devoutly anything (Sera--mildy Jewish, Eric--Church of Rock, Edlund--Goth) and they've been very diligent about taking from a number of religious traditions, though perhaps unsurprisingly they've relied most on the most prominent religion on their culture, Christianity
