I just read this cool entry on BitchPhD - it's a talk she gave recently. I think it's a good summary of why I really like her blog ( Read more... )

This is a tremendously exciting post, and I have three things that I just have to yell, but i would take an hour drafting it and wasting time on the interweb.

And so I shall choose to be oppressed by my boyfriend (he's gonna make me doing something good for my career), and come back to this later! :)

Sorry the post has changed. I was tired when editing it, so I'm afraid it still doesn't make much sense.

I think perhaps it could have formed two entries. The first one being about how much I liked BitchPhD's post and why. And the second being about my confusion/thoughts in relation to why no women asked questions at the seminar.

I was probably being a bit too simplistic anyway - when I know it's more complicated than I was getting at in the original post. Oh, now we're going to get groceries. I'll get onto the binary stuff soon. :) I'll see if I can be more articulate! ;)

And I'm not sure that women (and I hate making generalisations like this) buy into that kind of stuffI hate it when generalisations like that are made, because it detracts from what you are actually saying. :) I am going to show you that it is the nature of the way the question is asked, and not the question itself, that determines whether the person is showing off ( ... )

David, being a good feminist, even mentioned it as chair of the seminar. When soliciting questions from the audience, he tried to encourage the women to ask a question. But none did! This bit reminds me of a workmate's story. She went to a rural fire service training session, and noticed that although there were plenty of women there, she was the only one who was volunteering. The instructor tried to get a group of younger girls to volunteer, but they were too shy. Volunteering was important, because they had a large class and only a limited amount of equipment - and hands-on experience was necessary. Out of the rest of the group (the men), there was no shortage of volunteers to play with the equipment ( ... )
