I just read this cool entry on BitchPhD - it's a talk she gave recently. I think it's a good summary of why I really like her blog ( Read more... )

I'm tired now, and the post has changed! I am confused.

Asking questions at the end of talks: I think it's good to ask an interesting question because everyone else has to listen to it, but that's exactly why longwinded questions are terrible. Like questions that become mini talks, and the answer is not the focus, and in fact the speaker is not even the focus. It can be a power play, you could say more men do that, but i think women would be competitive in a different manner, say in private.

I would go to a talk to find out what that person had to say because I would be interested in that person, and if i wanted to know something more there are many other ways to find it out that asking questions - particularly as it is intimidating, and i need time to consider my thoughts. (I recently regretfully did not ask a question at a talk that was triggered by my contrary views).

I really like the idea of creating a new structure based on collaboration and skillshare and nurturance, and not giving into fearful assumptions of other's judgements.

Why must you break down binaries again? How do you do it?

Sorry the post has changed. I was tired when editing it, so I'm afraid it still doesn't make much sense.

I think perhaps it could have formed two entries. The first one being about how much I liked BitchPhD's post and why. And the second being about my confusion/thoughts in relation to why no women asked questions at the seminar.

I was probably being a bit too simplistic anyway - when I know it's more complicated than I was getting at in the original post. Oh, now we're going to get groceries. I'll get onto the binary stuff soon. :) I'll see if I can be more articulate! ;)
