show rec: The Killing

I watched the second ep of Body of Proof, and it was better than the first, especially writing-wise, but still not particularly good. It may never rise above solidly mediocre, but the protagonist, Megan Hunt, keeps doing this thing that makes me love her: she'll be thinking or talking about some stressful personal thing, and then suddenly she makes ( Read more... )

I think there must be something exceptionally bad about that Houston one where they played this year--the quality of play in the final round deteriorated so severely that it was like they'd all been cursed or something.

I didn't realize Rutgers had never won (I don't follow this as closely as you do, obviously); I just have a sense of them as a perennially good team, but perhaps they don't belong on that list. Mostly, though, yes, it's good for the sport when there's more depth in the ranks.

*stealth watches* It's sort of uncomfortably weird to be rooting for the Aggies for once! Huh.

The Killing's been getting such good buzz around my flist that I'm going to have to check it out as soon as I've caught on TSCC for my recap.

One of my childhood friends is an absolutely rabid Aggies fan, so I always feel a little bit predisposed toward them, at least when not presented with a compelling reason not to be. Then again, I also spent a summer at Notre Dame. But I tend to root against Notre Dame in football, so I guess I'm rooting for Texas A&M. A close game at the half, anyway!

I'm generally against A&M, partly because of the Aggies I know. ;) (Split family between UT and A&M in everything, so this is probably the first time we're all cheering for the same.)

I've gotta root for what they've done with women's ball lately though, and I'm LOVING this game!

I was pleasantly surprised by The Killing as well! Part of the premise for the female lead isn't my favorite. I don't know why we have to have the high stakes of her leaving to start a new life versus her staying to work the case. Other than that, though, I enjoyed it very much and plan to keep watching as long as AMC keeps posting the episodes online.

I don't think I mind the whole leaving/staying part of Linden's character; I think I'm intrigued by what's driving her, particularly if it's not especially personal (I hope it's not, but I guess we'll see). The way she makes this decision seems like a more vital part of what makes her tick than if it weren't an issue.

But overall I really enjoyed it and am looking forward to more!

just because...she's invested in the job and does it better than other people might do it

Yes, this. And I also suspect there's a certain extent to which she just really enjoys it--not the dark reality of having to deal with victims and grieving families and murderers, but I suspect she just finds it really satisfying to be very good at her job.

There's a lot of what Michelle Forbes has done that I haven't seen (one of these days I'll watch Homicide, for instance, and possibly the season of True Blood she did), but she's still one of those actors I find irresistibly compelling for some reason. Maybe it's Ro Laren (her Star Trek character): I do love Bajorans, after all. :) Actually, I suspect Ro Laren is exactly why so many people in fandom love her.
