So I wrote a wee V ficlet for the Hand-Kissing Commentathon thingie and figured I would stick it here for archival purposes. anr's prompt was "Erica/Jack, this is a story about":
Awww, your rant makes me sad because I watched the first few episodes of season one, quit because it was, well, as you said a bit boring and lacking in backbone and direction, and then was...vaguely considering retrying it having heard it was improving on that front.
But I don't think I will now. Boo. Rekha Sharma need a show that's ALL ABOUT HER.
To be honest, it's only been in the last four eps (season 1 finale and first three eps of season 2) that things have gone south on the race front, so it's possible they could rebound from it, but...I'm not holding my breath at all. Though I also hear that the ratings are lousy, and this is only a 10-ep season as ordered, but I would be a little surprised if they got more unless things change. So yeah, it's probably not worth your time, for a number of reasons.
I find the whole thing so frustrating, though, because they have always had the makings of a really excellent show--the same kind of situational bones, thematic possibilities, and potential layers of complexity as TSCC or BSG at its best--but there has also been a pretty consistent failure to execute up to potential. I suspect I will be giving it up shortly, but I think I will always mourn the show it might have been just a little bit.
(Though apparently I never cared enough to get any icons, and I don't have any Tory icons, either. :( Have Six, I guess!)
Don't do it! After my complaints last week, I still ended up half watching this week and, boy, did I regret it. In addition to everything Pellucid mentioned (and I totally agreed with her post), there was WTFery regarding the human soul. Basically, Anna is rounding up humans for experiments to harvest our souls. Because, unbeknownst to the human race, the soul is a thing that can be taken from us. And it gets better! Where are our souls located? Within our dying breath. So, she must, of course, torture us to capture that last gasp. Somewhere Cavil is rolling his eyes. :p
I've been less bothered by the whole soul thing because I assumed it was supposed to be ridiculous: that is, we're all supposed to think Anna rather naive about the whole thing, and somewhere along the way it will come out that the soul is not the sort of thing that can be isolated or captured or whatever. Or at least I hope we're supposed to think it's ridiculous and naive! If the show agrees with her, then yes, that's a great deal of WTFery

Gah!! I haven't seen this one yet, but when I saw your cut..well, my knowing is better than being blindsided for this show, Val's storyline taught me that. So this is even more disappointing to hear, since I just finished the first episode this season (which wasn't entirely riveting TV, but was excellent for doing laundry!) and overall I was happy that the women were all driving the story. With potential! *sigh*
After seeing Morena Baccarin do a fun panel at D*Con, I was sort of ready to give it another shot, but, yeah, maybe not. That Rekha Sharma would have another underused character killed off was a given, but dammit, this way is something I really just don't want to see.
Oh dear, I fear I was too revealing with the cut--though I imagine it's too late for the very few people who care about whether or not they were spoiled for last night's ep but haven't seen it yet. Still, I should be more careful about spoilers

That was a little lazy of me when replying, the cut only told me that sketchy stuff would be going down, I guessed shenanigans on Malik based on the fact it had to happen sometime? Given how casual they are about killing V's and how much danger she puts Erica in. It was a choose to be spoiled moment. :)
And ugh, it really is a shame that not only the morality is so sharply divided, they had to make it divided chromatically too. They could do SO MUCH BETTER!
Since I'm one of those people not watching V, I read the ficlet. (I did see the first two or three episodes, so I knew the characters.) It's lovely; I liked your take on Jack's thoughts.
Physically, they don't look at all alike (Jack is played by this guy), but they are not dissimilar characters. Or rather, if Jack had better writers he might start to approach being half as awesome as Ellison. If TSCC is a model for how to portray a character of faith in a really fascinating and well-rounded way, the writers of V would apparently not know a Bible if it hit them in the head. The idea of Jack is fabulous, but the execution is so shallow; he spouts meaningless platitudes and never seems to struggle with any potential conflicts between his life as a priest and his life as a vigilante terrorist. I find it extremely frustrating
