stretching the fic-writing muscles?

Jul 15, 2009 20:32

So there has been an unpopular fannish opinions meme going around. And I've contemplated doing it, but I don't think I'll bother. But I was struck by one of gabolange's: she mentioned that the kind of fic she writes is not the kind of fic she tends to read, and vice versa. And that got me pondering a little bit ( Read more... )

csi: ny, do i really need a judging amy tag?

Ticky box! I have no preference at all! Just, you know, give me fair warning so I can go mainline a few episodes. :)

I'm sort of leaning towards the Judging Amy, because it's just insane that there aren't more post-finale fics for that show. Except that there would probably be zero audience for that kind of thing--and I'm not even sure how easy it would be for you to mainline a few episodes.

I'm less intrigued by the possibility of Bones, to be honest, because as much as I'm loving it, there are already people writing lots of absolutely lovely fics in that fandom, and I don't so much feel like I need to add to them. But on the other hand, Booth and Brennan are totally first place in my list of pairings I'm intrigued by at the moment--rather head and shoulders above Bruce and Amy or Mac and Stella.

So I don't really know. I may not write any of it, but I'm kind of inclined to do something new and light and out of character. And then I can write about Sarah and Ellison. ;)

I just went looking in some of the usual places, and discovered that it might be difficult, indeed. (Except, for some reason, the first five episodes of season three?) But hey, whatever. If it's shippy and fluffy, there's sort of a trope to the whole thing, and a passing familiarity might be good enough. And then there's always the option to return to my in violation of university policy ways, which I will never truly dismiss. :)

And then I can write about Sarah and Ellison. ;)

I'm also happy to give you a full rundown of Bruce and Amy's relationship as I see it. :) Not that this would much help you for those "I'm not sure this bit is in character" moments, but, well, part of the point of this, I think, is that not only the fic but also the writing process should be a bit lighter and fluffier than usual. We'll see! Last night I thought I would go with Bruce and Amy first, but then I woke up this morning with Mac Taylor in my head, and Mac and Stella have more votes, anyway, so...

Of course, if I'm going with votes, I suppose it's really Bones I should be writing. But I'm not yet feeling the inspiration there. Hmm.

How about fluffy Sarah/Ellison?! Problem solved!

Yes!

Ahem.

I kind of feel bad voting for that too just since I think if you want to stretch your muscles but I love pellucid fic! And also, I totally forgot to vote for Bones as well. So, um, sorry, and please pretend I ticky-boxed appropriately!

As I said to Chaila, I'm, um, probably not going to pay much attention to the votes (my journal is not, surprisingly enough, a democracy!), so don't feel bad. ;) And I promise I will write Sarah/Ellison! Just...not immediately, probably ( ... )

Well, given that I'm probably going to write whatever I feel like writing regardless of votes, don't feel bad voting! And I will write Sarah/Ellison one of these days--never fear! Whether or not it's fluffy, however ( ... )

I picked Sarah and Ellison just because I know the characters. And Bruce and Amy just because I feel like there should be fic for everything on the internet. I'll probably read whatever you write, though.

Fluffy ship fic can be incredibly fun to write (and read, obviously.) So, no shame. ;) And there's no rule that says it can't have meta and character insights, either.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way! I always get so shocked and slightly depressed when I get inspired to go look for fic for a certain show/film/whatever and find that there isn't any.

To be fair, there is some Judging Amy fic out there, but for a show that ran six seasons fairly recently, it's surprisingly little. There are 72 stories at ff.net for the entire fandom--and of course not all of those are Bruce/Amy (and some of them are awful, and some are unfinished, though there are two or three that are quite readable). And then there's the Yuletide one I linked above, and a couple that aj wrote once upon a time, all of which are lovely. That's it. And Bruce and Amy have all this sizzling UST, and in an active fandom there would be countless shippy post-ep fics for all these episodes, and I just do not understand why that's too much to ask! If you want something done right, do it yourself, I suppose... ;)

You really need a Judging Amy tag. If only because I will totally click on it. :-) I have not seen anyone on LJ discuss Judging Amy except you. And we we talked about it, it was so fun. I would totally be interested in what you'd write. Especially after Infinite Regress. I'm so there. ;-)

I'm pretty sure at this point we can call "do I really need a Judging Amy tag?" my Judging Amy tag. ;)

I don't understand why there isn't more love for this show! I mean, okay, family drama doesn't exactly bring the fangirls, I guess, but for there to be so little fic, period?!? But chances are good that I will end up writing a post-finale Bruce/Amy fic, and I'll be happy to know that even if no one else cares, you will!

It strikes me that if you want to write something different, Bones would give you a lot to work with. Not that I've seen more than three episodes, but it seems like it has enough meaty character stuff without the big thematic arc.

You're absolutely right: with the exception of Sarah and Ellison, Booth and Brennan are by far the meatiest and most interesting characters of the ones I'm proposing to write about. I like them best, I like the show best (again, with the TSCC exception), yet...I don't really feel like writing them.

I think it's because lots of people are writing them and doing a lovely job of it: I'm perfectly happy to read other people's fic and don't really see a place where I would have much new to contribute. Hopefully at least the latter will change at some point because I would like to write them (and judging from the votes on this poll of mine--which I may or may not actually take into consideration in thinking about what I will write next--other people would like to see me write them), but at the moment I'm feeling more inspired by Bruce and Amy and Mac and Stella--not because they're more interesting, but because they're not getting as much love.
