Apparently it's Quote Leo McGarry Day. I'm not sure why today, but I'm definitely in favor of such an occasion. My very favorite Leo quote, which came to mean even more to me during this past election season:

Because I'm tired of it, year after year after year after year, having to choose between the lesser of who cares, of trying to get myself ( Read more... )

I wasn't either, but apparently it's an annual commemoration of the life and work of John Spencer.

Was today his birthday or something? I mean, I'm completely in favor of having an annual commemoration of his life and work, but I wondered why today. *is too lazy to google this, clearly*

I think maybe this is the date of his death?

(Uses my only WW icon, which is in fact your quoted line. *g*)

It is his date of death, yes--my curiosity overcame my laziness, so I googled.

I know, right? "Robots from the future robots from the future robots from the future oh, cool, UFOs!" I don't even know. I suppose it could be a hallucination; she was hallucinating before, after all...

I sort of liked the UFO thing at the beginning--I thought it was an interesting way in, and the dynamic between Sarah and the UFO folks was unique and fun. But I did not expect this query to result in actual UFOs!

I sincerely hope, though, that it's not a hallucination, because I think that would make me further irritated with the way Sarah's plotline has been going of late. Even if the UFOs are kind of crazy, I rather want them to be real and important to vindicate Sarah and her recent craziness.

But how human does Sarah remain compared with Jesse here, for whom Riley is merely a tool to do a job? Sarah's moment of compassion gets her shot--could well get her killed, except I think we can be fairly confident that she won't die. Jesse's lack of compassion leads to Riley's death.

I was also struck by that contrast, although I also doubt she's actually dead. What Riley wants from Jesse is actually some form of mothering, too; we see Jesse pluck Riley out of a hellhole and essentially groom her to be John Connor's girlfriend, in a sort of dark reflection of a maternal relationship.

Yes, I was struck reading your post how we'd both touched on these themes.

The irony for Riley is that if she would tell the Connors she's from the future, they might well take her in, which has at least the potential to be a much better family situation for her than a foster family who doesn't know what she's been through or any form of mothering from Jesse. Not that Sarah's a model of maternal success, exactly, and she dislikes Riley, and if Riley were to confess all this there would no doubt be a big throw-down with Jesse, but still.

Of course it's moot if Riley is dead. I'm with you that that it didn't seem like she'd be dead, but John and Cameron sure were acting like she was. I mean, if your girlfriend has just attempted suicide in your bathroom but is not yet dead, do you just cradle her in shock without trying to staunch the blood or get help?
