Lazy weekend

Jun 10, 2012 10:58

I had all sorts of good intentions about this weekend, mostly involving cleaning up the yard and the house. But the heat and humidity has sapped away all of my forward momentum, and I don't think I'm going to do any of it. I've really had difficulty the past couple days. We don't have central air, and Rob hasn't put the window air conditioner into ( Read more... )

I highly highly endorse studying abroad. It's usually not any more expensive than staying put, and it's fantastically educational in ways that you can never get in the classroom.

Oh, she's very determined to do it. I went abroad when I was in college and have talked about it with her, and how life-changing it was, and it's always been part of her college plan.

Living abroad was the real start of me growing up.

Glad she's thinking about it early. I did a summer in Paris between my freshman and sophomore years -- which turned out to be the only time I could logistically have fit in study abroad!!! If she wants to study abroad it's never too early to start the research to figure out where and when she intends to go, because oftentimes the various foreign programs don't quite mesh well with your own school's academic calendar, and depending on the timing of prerequisites, etc etc, if you leave it too late you may end up not being able to do it at all. Does she know where yet? It was one of the best things I ever did for myself, and I still think about that summer 10 years later.

Where would she like to study abroad? Do none of her college friends live nearby, as she does? Congrats on having a smooth transition to having her back home; I remember that first summer home as being very stressful. It wasn't that I wasn't a good kid, but I WAS used to monitoring my own comings and goings, and resented having to account for every moment again. Hence - a lot of arguing. I'm glad you've been avoiding that so far; sounds like some wonderful conversations.

Would Delia be willing to share a pic of her new look?

Her preferences are either England or Spain if she's in Europe, or possibly somewhere in Latin America or South America (her second language is Spanish). She's going to be taking Latin American Culture first semester next year, which may offer some inspiration about where she'd like to go, and she hopes to travel abroad for second semester.

I'll see about whether Delia would be willing to share a picture.

Yea study abroad! I'm glad to read she's thinking about it now. Only a few of my friends in college studied abroad. There was a perception in the drama department that you'd miss too much if you went away even for just a semester. Everyone I know who went, even those who had a really hard time of it, really values their experience.
