I am so glad you're home for this.

I had this moment in the middle of college when I realized I would never again be that eldest daughter of the home. It was Santa Lucia Day that got me that way, this adulthood-thing stretching before me suddenly looking a little more vast and real.

It hit me while I was on the retreat and I actually cried a little: I have to get home because this is Fiona's last St. Lucia Day.

It's the first time I've cried at the thought of her leaving for college.

Yes. There is so much about having her grow up that is the goal of parenthood. You want an independent adult woman with her own interests and strengths. But that doesn't make the last time on special days like this very much easier.

I've never heard of this holiday before and don't really understand the symbolism, but a brief search turns up a little background.

Most important, everyone looks so ecstatic. Warmed me up a few degrees.

I love how bed-tousled they still look, and so cute nestled together like that. And Delia with the bread in her mouth is hilarious.

Wow - I didn't think constantly-snowy places like MN ever got a snow day. Cancellations due to excessive cold, yes, but not snow. I'm assuming you weren't so lucky. :P Hope your girls enjoy their break. And their delicious breakfast. Did Delia bake that in your absence?

Fiona baked the lussekatter.

We call snow days rarely, but even though the streets had been plowed, there was so much of it that many of the side streets were restricted to one lane only, and there was fear that many of the buses wouldn't be able to get through.
