Thank you, Dr. Salk

Dr. Salk discovered a vaccine that stopped polio. I was five, all excited because I would soon be six and would be starting school in the fall.

My Mama took me and my little brother (probably 3 or just nearly) to the Mobile Public Library and we stood in this long line of mothers and children in the parking lot for about three hours.

When we got to head of the line, I was given a sugar cube to suck on. I was probably fussy about this because I don't much care for really sweet things. Don't know how they got my little brother to eat the cube. That was that...waiting and eating a sugar cube and then, never having to fear about dying because I loved to play in the delightful puddles after a rainy summer day.

Thank you, Dr. Salk. Now most folks don't remember or never knew about "polio water".

Can't wait til the other "miracles" happen, the ones that protect us from AIDS and cancer. There's some smart folks out there, I just know it. I send up little prayers for their success because I like this living.
