Fox with Toxo

Mar 14, 2012 11:08

We have a darling little fox in. It was being kicked by thugs and a man stopped his car to help and the fox jumped into his car. He brought it to us. When I saw it last night it was alert, very interested in me, not at all fearful and limping in the back leg. It was curling its paw ( Read more... )

Oh, dear that made me cry as well (especially, "It may be that euthanasia is it’s best option. And look how cute it is!" LOL)! I know you all will make the best decision possible for it, whatever it may be, but I really hope it turns out that it's able to live out its life in a safe, comfortable environment, rather than your having to put to sleep that sweet, innocent little foxy. :(

That said, as horrible as it is that those bastards were abusing it, it warms my heart to hear how that man stopped to help. It's the kind-hearted people like that who make up for the heartless ones. :}

We try to do what is best for the quality of life for the animal. We wouldn't want them kept in cages as they don't do well there. The best option is for someone like Brian that has 75 acres to allow it to be released. If that isn't a possibility, I has to be humanely destroyed. It wrenches our hearts.

I pretty much understand, I guess (and am not close enough to break in to save the sweet little foxy and whisk him away to a friendly backyard) but why the "away from humans" part? Just because wild animals, humans don't mix?

Surely not on account of the toxoplasmosis? It's my understanding that most adult H.sap. already have been infected. (No, not all; and yes, that's why pregnant women generally ought not to clean cat boxes.)

Hopping into the car - one suspects this sweet little beastie is not just failing to be afraid of predators, but may have been taming them in his spare time. ;-)

OT but CUTE:
Speaking of foxes, tame - real ones - have you read about the Russian project that for a few decades now has been breeding Siberian foxes, but only the friendliest from each generation? They now have foxes that bark and wag their tails. There've been genetic and anatomical changes, too. And these days, many of those weeded out of the breeding program are sold as tamer-than-average-dog housepets. Wow.

No because sadly people can take advantage of an animal who has toxo, which is why he was being kicked and abused in the first place. :-( Humans are the only predators of adult foxes here and you would not believe how people abuse them. :-( We would prefer to let him go on land where there are no other people to bother him. If he was wild, we could let him go and he would be wary of people ( ... )

I know euthanasia is sometimes the kindest option, God knows I've been through it with pets, but I don't think I could work somewhere I had to deal with it on a regular basis.

That's how I feel - I would love to work at a vets or volunteer at a sanctuary, but I don't think I could deal with it regularly, either (even though I, too, realise it's sometimes for the best). I really admire anyone who has the strength to deal with that aspect of such work and do so much good for the critters. :)
