Athorism

First off, I would like to take the oportunity to define two things:

Athiesm
-noun
1.
the doctrine or belief that there is no god.
2.
disbelief in the existence of a supreme being or beings.
Athorism
-noun
a strong belief that the nordic deity Thor doesn't exist.

Anyone see the problem?

I recently got into a discussion about arguments between athiests ( Read more... )

So I'm not an Atheist, I'm more spiritual than anything and don't belong to a specific denomination of Christianity but I thought I would join this little discussion ( ... )

Yes, I know what you mean about the way athiests are made to look. Some people may think that I'm one of those people, but I'm not. I want to get to the truth, not shout down others trying to do the same thing. Personally, I don't think that any god is less sentinient than humanity because I don't believe in one ( ... )

Yes, I find that those with the weakest beliefs tend to flip when they're questioned. I'm not labeling a certain belief weak here, I'm saying that different people can have different strengths of beliefs, theists or athiests. People whose beliefs are easily questionable, seem, from the beginning, to disregard logic and common sense ( ... )

I believe in the potential for things beyond myself and the world I can see, but I don't believe in a God. If people want to oversimplify my position by saying that I believe in nothing, that's up to them. Their lack of nuance isn't my problem.

I tend not to get into debates with people about this sort of thing because they already think they've got me pegged based on the fact that I identify as an atheist, and I don't have the energy to engage with someone who is likely unwilling to take me for who I am rather than that idea they have of me.

No, I think spiritual and religious beliefs can be very complex and interesting, even in athiests. If i were to believe in anything, it would be that we have souls that reincarnate, without the existence of a higher power. Sometimes I do believe that, but not always.

That's an interesting idea. I've never really given much thought to reincarnation, though believing as I do in general interconnectedness and the world beyond myself, it's something that makes sense to me.

Reincarnation for me, feels like it could be true. Sometimes I feel like my the person I am couldn't really end when my body does. I kind of feel too real and unique to just disappear. And since I've made it clear I don't believe in God, then reincarnation seems like the only way.

Of course, other times, I think its just wishful thinking.
