Chickpea Surprise!

Mar 04, 2009 18:04

The surprise mostly being that I am finally emptying a can of the suckers into a saucepan.

For years I have harbored a ridiculous "emergency back-up supply" of legumes, and despite my recent donations to the bushfire appeal, I STILL have far too many chickpeas. Especially for a piss-weak vegetarian who never recovered from her first crack at dahl.

I love chickpeas! My favourite use for them is in Iranian-style lamb stew.

Oh, I love 'em too. Indian is my favorite cuisine. Just not when I'm cooking. *cringes*

That Iranian-style lamb and chickpea soup sounds... interesting. O_o

How are you dudes doing fire-wise over there at the moment? I've lost track.

Our corner of the state is ok, fire-wise, and we just had buckets of rain (the first since early January) which should put an end to the fire season. We had a (very suspicious) fire about 5km from us, which was scary, and kept re-igniting (also suspicious!) but it's out now. I haven't yet put away my fire plan (hint: it involves leaving early) but I think we should be okay now.

I cook chick-peas with chopped celery, tomato sauce, salt, pepper, one or two cloves, sauteed onion and olive oil all mixed together in some water. It looks like soup at first but as the chick-peas cook the liquid evaporated, yadda, yadda. If they're pre-cooked, you'd cook up the ingredients first and then add the chick peas towards the end.

I love chickpeas and hubby!Sam won't eat a salad without them--yep, rinsed right out of the can. I like them a lot in couscous, hot or as salad, and I like them in a tomato-based curry with cauliflower and carrots that I fix and serve over yellow rice. My only complaint is: If they have chickpeas, where are the dudepeas? Huh? Bet they'd be awesome!!!

*grins unrepentantly*

I don't care much for chickpeas so I'm no help. But is that naan bread? The King among breads.

You bet your ARSE that's naan bread. Garlic naan, no less. No greater bread exists in the multiverse. *tips hat*
