A Writer Gets It Right

God, I wish I could remember the sci-fi story that pretty much went along these lines. The only details I remember is that it's about a man and his wife, and the government is putting in subliminal billboards all up and down the highway, encouraging people to buy new things. Your recollection sure sounds like a piece of the story "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K Dick. This is the novel that Blade Runner was (loosely) based on. As usual, the book is far better than the film adaptation.

I remember my story being a self-contained piece, with the finale being that the protagonist breaks the billboards, exposing the subliminal message (BUY BUY BUY MORE MORE MORE) to everyone along the highway, so I don't think that's it.

I couldn't get into the movie, btw. Maybe I'll give the book a try.

A friend of mine there said that people just throw stuff away after a year or less. They don't want to look like they need old or outdated stuff and nobody else wants it either so it's just... curbed.
