Tess of the D'Urbevilles is still PRETTY depressing, but (looking up the plot of the original on wikipedia which I never read), less so! :)

It is EXCEPTIONALLY depressing if you really cannot understand where Tess is coming from, ruining her own life by dillying between telling Angel or simply staying silent forever (a perfectly valid option, their plan was to emigrate to the US or Brazil and what he didn't know wouldn't hurt him).
