I've found the smaller Saturns to be extraordianaily reliable (currently up through 120k miles), and if you keep them well tuned they'll turn over between 36 and 45mpg, depending on how you drive. I prefer this one to the comperable models from Toyota and Honda precisely because of the long legs issue.

The Honda Civic with the small engine, if you can fit into it, has upwards of 45mpg (breaking even with the hybrid version in town, beating it on the freeway, and with more cargo space since it only has one engine).

Please forgive the poor spelling in the last post - - it's 3AM and my internal spelling nazi is only intermittantly available.

I personally like the Honda Civic Hybrid. It's sporty, it's got some room to it (well, compared to my current vehicle anyways), it's super fuel efficient (like 54mpg), and you can get a certified pre-owned for under 20k. It'll probably be my next car, I have a Honda now and they run forever with very little maintenance. :D

I love my civic, and it's my second one. Still going strong a 1999 getting over 35 MPG. However, I have my eye on the Honda Fit... so cute and little roomier. You might look into it. Also Duffie has a bee in his bonnet about VW's new line of biodiesal cars, you might talk to him about it. He's done a lot of research and it looks to be a great option.

I have heard good comments on the fit. Nice to hear that it is roomier.
I hope to start test driving stuff soon.

I love my Echo. Not sure if they're still available in the US though, at least, not new. 38mpg is hard to argue with.

My mom has a Prius. She gets an average of 44MPG for her west marin driving. Apparently tire pressure matters a whole lot. Let the tires drop just a couple PSI and you'll start noticing it in the mileage. The Prius has tons of cargo space and seems roomy in the leg areas. I'm short so I don't REALLY know, but I'd think it'd totally be worth a test drive. Ted and I looked into used ones and they are under $20G.
