A series of shoutouts

Mar 12, 2006 16:48

I'm writing this post a self-consciously, since yesterday I learned that, despite the small number of comments these days, more people than I imagined still read this journal. I feel like I need to be a better performing monkey.

This is a post about yesterday, which was an unusually social day for me.
First substantive post in a while, if by 'substantive' you'll accept 'long'. )

Good job! Are you sure you don't want to start taking CS classes?

Mighty quick response time you had there...

When you assume! ode_to_tapirs March 13 2006, 16:25:24 UTC
INTERESTINGLY, although I could certainly understand the assumption, NOT shock value at all, but in fact SENTIMENTAL value (and, to a lesser degree of course, humor). We would never have projected just any porn! Goodness, I don't think I've ever even seen any other porn! Brendan has a particular attachment to Load After Load, and indeed, upon watching it and discovering that, based on hair life, it obviously took this gentleman years upon years to make it, it's comforting that at least someone cares. I too was resistant...despite being constantly harangued, I refused to watch until just last week. It's much better with the sound, of course, but for someone who loves the marginalized as much as footfoot, it's not surprising that this totally unappealing fellow and his totally unfathomable audience have got a little foothold in his heart. Let it be noted, however, that my suggestion to project "something pretty" was deemed too pretentious! Also, I don't NEED a special name, but I suppose I wouldn't mind.

I knew you would object to my interpretation of the events--glad to be set straight on this. Now I see it your way, and it's true--that's a fine sentiment.

I mean, I don't want to force a special name on you. It's up to you. Originally the thought was that it would protect the innocent from crazy internet stalkers/add flare.

There's the problem that there are so many Allisons.

From your description of why you value literature, it reads to me a little like I would describe 'truth,' now, sort of...I'm not sure what I mean by anything any more.

But having a fictional moment, or concept, or image, or narrative, through which our own experience makes more sense seems to me to be exactly what science accomplishes as well--concepts and images with which we can make sense of our experience.

That's why, as I was saying, I no longer draw such a stark line between the two.

As for fiction raising standards, or heightening the experience of our lives goes...I'm more undecided. This might by falsehood (although not necessarily bad because of it?). But yes, I agree that this is an aspect of art that can be valuable.

It's nice to see you have an on-line journal now. I'm sure it will be interesting!
