I have a Lenovo laptop, and it drives me nuts. It is incredibly slow to boot and load programs. There's way too much Lenovo crap loaded onto it. Plus, they charge extra for that crap. Himself has a Dell, which is very loud but it loads relatively quickly and all the software flies.
I have a Dell now, as does Jen, and I like it a lot. I always assumed the Lenovo at work was slow because of all the work crap loaded on it. Thanks for the info (and I've been reading your lovely descriptions of the weather -- thank you!)
Frankly, if you've been happy with a 7-year-old machine, you can buy pretty much any laptop out there and be fine. Well, not one of the "nettop" range, like the Eee; but you should be able to get something for $600 or so. That should get you a dual-core CPU, a gig of RAM, WiFi, and plenty of hard drive. (That's what I got for $850 two years ago.)
Of course, that's assuming you get an XP machine (which I think is still possible); Vista would probably require 2GB RAM.
Or you could compromise: buy an Eee for $350, and a 4-year-old desktop for...$50?
Personally, I think the MacBook could do what you need. I can get you one of the white MacBooks for $850 base price - 2.1ghz core 2 duo, 1G ram, 120G hard drive.
It won't come with licenses for Microsoft Office, that you would have to buy extra. CoffeCup and Semagic probably don't run on Mac, but there are equivalent things.
