So, the Dr. tells me that I have the opposite of what happens to kids with serious ear infections. Instead of my eardrums bulging out, they are being sucked inward so hard that they look like vacu-form stuff, so much so that you can see most of the bone structure within the middle ear ( Read more... )

This happened to me in the fall of 2003 and it took two years to resolve because I fly frequently. I would get fluid and it would get infected and I would be sick for a week at a time. My boss thought I was trying to extend my vacations using sick leave because I'd always be sick for a few days after the plane touched ground, and then we figured out what the problem was ( ... )

I don't know if it helps with inner ear stuff, but I have a new emergency decongestant.

Altoids.

If you like them, it wouldn't hurt to carry a box with you on the plane. As a supplement to the real thing, of course.

Also: drink a lot of water. The decongestants thin the gunk, by making more water show up where it is.

When I was a little kid, if there was fluid in the ears, the pediatrician would say that there were fishies; if an infection, alligators. So...I an wishing for you no alligators in your ears, and that the fishies go swim elsewhere, especially what with the flight and all!
