To me, it often seems an act of desperation for a man who's increasingly growing to feel that he *can't* change anything else. Sam has always been about getting and keeping control, and he's at his most volitile when control has been stripped away. He doesn't necessarily want to run everything his way, but he wants things to make sense, to have order, to have a solution or cure.
But now he's found out that really ... most things just don't answer, and he's pretty much helpless to change the things that really matter. Can't save Dean. Couldn't save Jess. Couldn't even recognise the signs in time to save Dad. The only change Sam knows he can affect ... are those to himself.
Which is actually kind of sad, because making the choice to sacrifice who you are, as opposed to Dean sacrificing himself, is a terrible thing. But I suspect Sam doesn't see any other way. It's war, he's noted already, ( ... )
