Claire smiles mechanical, hanging red drapes in the kitchen as if nothing's changed. There's dirt on her hands as she pulls him in, her small frame pinned between John and the dripping counter.
"It's sweet how you worry about me," she sings. His teeth clench guilty around kisses tinged with peanut butter, burnt toast - hers don't.
A whimper, another name, escapes past her tongue as he moves rough against her. He accepts - tries - that he'll never be anything but this, strong fingers gripping her tight, to keep her from falling, skin wet with soap, sudden tears.
John whispers into her hair, her knees buckling. "I miss him too."
