Faith in "God" kills another young person

Well for anyone who hasn't yet heard this story an 11 year old girl recently died of a treatable form of diabetes after her religious parents refused to get her treatment. They instead chose to wait for "God" to save her...now their child is dead from an otherwise treatable condition. The part that should sicken everyone is that while the parents ( Read more... )

I think faith can be a good thing but I also think some people depend on it too much. While it's nice to pray to God for things to get better or believe that there's some kind of "higher power" who causes everything to happen (if that's what you're into to) I don't think it's good to put all of your hope in that. It's sad that some people let their faith dictate their lives like that and never even realize they were wrong.

I agree, I mean I think once people reach a certain age they can make decisions for themselves. If the Mother or Father of this child didn't want medical treatment that is fine, But the child should not be subjected to the faith of the parents. That is simply child abuse. I have worked at a hospital for 5 years and you have no idea how many times we have to get court orders to take children away from overly religious parents who refuse medical treatment for the kids. Sad...very very sad

I don't believe in a god either, but I do toy with the idea sometimes... suffice it to say, I don't think saying "God isn't real, hospitals are," is an appropriate response to this story.

Having faith and believing in God isn't what's wrong here, but the doctrine from whatever church group her parents followed. I think people should seriously stop trying to advocate these types of doctrines that forbid getting medical attention. I mean, seriously, if it's the will of God... well, God willed it that men could make these advances in medicine in order to save YOUR life... so get over yourself and give your kid the help they need.

I agree with you in some ways. Yes can say the doctrine is the problem. I don't think that will change much but until we destroy the root of the problem nothing will change. If we can get people to realize that there are no "Gods" who have set rules and regulations for humanity we can get them to focus on themselves. I have found that the most religious and "Faithful" people I know are also the most insecure with themselves.
