Title: Late Night Rendezvous - Somewhere Only We Know
Author: wiked_nachos
Fandom/Pairing: Criminal Minds - JJ/Emily
Summary: In the months following the 'death' of Emily, JJ receives a number of phone calls late at night from someone she doesn't recognise.
Rating: G, nothing graphic, no swearing. Just feelings and a little angst.
Disclaimer: I own nothing but if I did, JJ never would have left and Emily never would have 'died'. Main title is from the lyrics of a Keane song by the same name.

Thirteen. That was the number of days JJ had been waiting anxiously and unable to concentrate on anything no matter how hard she tried. After four days she had called Will and begged him to come and take Henry for a little while under the guise of spending some quality time together before Christmas. It was all Emily's fault. If she hadn't died and gone on a crusade, if she hadn't left JJ alone to deal with all the secrets, she could have been fine. It was because of Emily that JJ felt she couldn't cope with the feeling of increasing pressure on her thoughts, and her ability to do her job and be a mother.

Everyone at work had noticed a change in JJ's attitude. Garcia had suggested that she was turning into Hotch after Haley had died, only worse. Instead of joining the group in the break room for lunch or a coffee every few hours the blonde had almost completely shut herself off, only leaving her office for a consult on a file or to use the bathroom and get a quick coffee. As soon as she was done, JJ would retreat to her office without so much as a 'hey, how's it going?' to bury herself in the never ending piles of case files.

It was late on a Friday night when JJ finally left the office, after many prompts from the team to join them for a drink. She pulled into her driveway just as the snow began falling and let her elbows rest against the wheel with her face in her hands. Emily was her drug of choice and she was cut off. Losing control was never easy for JJ, whether it was voluntary or not. She was tired and it was all Emily fault. "Goddamit Emily!" She moved to pinch the bridge of her nose but was distracted when the motion sensor security light outside the front door suddenly flickered to life.

When she realised the light had come on, naturally she looked up to see what had caused it. Her gaze was caught on a figure standing at the bottom on the front steps. It was a woman with a strikingly familiar shadow. She had a guest, she couldn't waste anymore time in the car and forced herself to grab her bag, open the door and lock it behind her.

"Can I help you?" Her gun was still attached to her hip. JJ consciously swapped her bag from one hand to the other, so if need be she could reach for her gun. Even though her neighbourhood was a highly safe one in the D.C. area, after everything she saw day after day, it didn't stop doubts from invading her thoughts.

The voice was so familiar that the moment the figure spoke, her bag dropped to the slightly snow covered front path and JJ could suddenly feel her own cold fingers covering her mouth. "I hope so. I tried calling." As the woman hesitantly came closer to JJ, the light shifted and gave the blonde a better view to confirm the identity of the woman in front of her. She choked on a sob and the moment the light's angle shifted she could already see the glassiness in the eyes of the woman.

"Emily."

Her voice was gentle and hoarse, but still the best thing JJ had ever heard. "Hey, Jayje."

JJ tried to speak, but her voice was gone. Her hand tentatively reached out, fingertips grazing over Emily's features; across her cheeks; down her nose; over her lips; threading into her hair. She had to make sure that it wasn't a dream, that the brunette was really here. "I missed you, so much. It was getting so hard."

"I'm sorry. It was the only way I thought I could protect you. If I could take all the pain away I would. You know I would."

JJ let an arm wrap around Emily's shoulder, her free hand disappearing into Emily's hair again pulling the other woman to her tightly. Emily's arms encircled the blonde's ribs, holding on just as strongly. The brunette could feel JJ's body shaking with her cries and sobs. All the pressure to suffer in silence and lie to her best friends, her family was finally gone. Henry had his second mother back. A few minutes later and JJ pulled back just enough to brush her lips softly against Emily's. The world exploded all over again. They were still as soft as JJ remembered, still tasted like she same strawberry gloss Emily used.

They separated out of breath slightly, foreheads touching with tears still streaming. JJ's sobs had subsided as she felt a thumb brush the tears from her cheeks.

"You're home?"

"Yeah. And I'm not going anywhere, Jennifer. Ever again." The determined look in Emily's eyes proved that she was telling the truth.

JJ found Emily's eyes with her own, holding her gaze and wanting nothing more than to get lost in the dark brown orbs. The brunette was searching just as deeply into JJ's bright blue eyes, trying to figure out what she had been through. The two women were in a world that only they knew. Finally together again. That was all that mattered.
