Fear of Comparison Shopping

I'm not denying that scans_daily was a "piracy-lite" site. I'm not saying that posting eleven pages of a twenty-two page comic is my right, that it's legal or falls under fair use. It's not. We just got away with it.

But here are things to consider:

- There were 8980 LiveJournal users who were members of the group, with 6731 LiveJournal members watching it ( Read more... )

Sure! Yeah, I was very big into HP for a while there. After DH and Prophecy I was pretty burnt out, though, so I started commenting on S_D, and the rest is history!

Edit: and by "Sure!" I mean, yes, go ahead and friend. =P

You lasted longer than I did. I've been slowly drifting away from Harry Potter fandom since shortly after Half Blood Prince came out, and only return to read epic wanks.

And awesome! Friended. =D

Where did you hang out in the HP fandom?

Ah yes, HP wanks were always the most fun.

That's surprising to me that the people at those two fan sites had no idea about Oracle perhaps/probably becoming Batgirl again.

Wow.

Can you point me to a link? I'm curious.

Sorry, I think I may have been unclear there. I have no way of knowing whether or not the WFA maintainers know/care about it, but perusing the recent WFA entries, there isn't any discussion about it.

As for G-W, their blogs (GWOG, GirlsReadComics, InsideOut, and Designated Sidekick) have been very inactive. Like I said, I don't mean to chastise them, since G-W does do good things other than blogging.

But the thread in question was this one. I may be generalizing, and maybe I'm just not reading the right threads there, but I just get the impression that a lot of them haven't been following it ( ... )

Oh god. I just got to your Tomasi quote and I feel too sick...

I liked him.

Me too. I still love him for his run on Nightwing, but yeah, the "microwave" comment really got to me.

Came here via noscans_daily. This is an excellent piece, and deserves to be linked around. Do you mind if I do so?

Well said.
(a casual s_d member--occasional commenter, never posted--here, a few days behind on the news. Still not sure what to say myself. I haven't even had much time for it lately, and it still hurts to see it gone, and to see so many people describing it as something it wasn't with such hate.)

Hey - random SDer here.

You hit the nail on the head. It's not the loss of the scans that really hurt (though it is a great loss), it's the loss of the sense of camaraderie that made scans_daily feel like home. It wasn't the comics scans that kept me coming back - it was the sense of belonging to a community.

So when the majority of the comics blogosphere, including someone I respect as highly as Ms. Fortuner/Ragnell/morchades, reacts just by saying, "You assholes got what was coming to you!", it's like salt in the wound. I also thought of the comics blogosphere as a big extended family or circle of friends, and the revelation that we're apparently so loathed was like a kick in the head.

Hiya, thanks. And yeah, "salt in the wound" is a good way to describe it.

Filby, I honestly didn't set out to make a "you assholes got what was coming to you" post. I was trying for a "Guys, don't pretend you didn't know what you were doing. Sorry you lost a place to meet, but you need to wise up and protect yourselves next time" post. But I've got two things working agiasnt me. One, I'm on a legitimate news site there and can't word it so that it seems I'm saying "For the love of god, hide your shame!" (even though I basically said that in the comments) even though one of my my main concerns about S_D was that we're all kind of fucking with the Fair Use defense in various ways in the Blogosphere and a site like S_D is the sort that will bring heat down on all of us. Two, I've got a trigger when it comes to people taking the wrong lesson from stuff like this. And really, when people started connecting the "most active female discussion site on the net" to "taken down" rather than "most active and high profile soft piracy site on the net" to "taken down" I just had to bang my head against the wall ( ... )

the rumors about Marvel and Livejournal are convincing me here that I was right to be worried

Well, I wouldn't worry too much if you're just scanning a panel or two, especially if it's not a recent comic. I think what's happening right now, is that Marvel is sending C & D notices (by way of LJ Abuse, I believe) to the people who they definitely know posted scans on LiveJournal. My guess is that LJ has given them reading access to the suspended community, so they're going through the recent backlog to find a few offenders and put the scare in us.

It seems unlikely they'd go after other bloggers who are just posting a few panels. Hell, there are probably other communities that post Marvel scans on LJ, but are still under the radar.

(I feel safe in the knowledge that the only Marvel comic I ever scanned and posted was from the late 80s/early 90s. It was about Spider-Man and Ghost Rider visiting Toronto and saving some kid who would not shut up about bike safety. :D )
