Heat Resources

Those of us in the Northeast are currently experiencing a heat wave with some places expecting highs today of 100ºF (which I think is 37.5ºC, for you Canuckians and other people on saner temperature scales than us). So I thought that I'd solicit people's heat stories and heat advice here, so anyone with experience and ideas can lend it to anyone ( Read more... )

To be honest - we hit 100F last weekend and neither the 'tiels nor the conures batted an eye. No one was panting, or holding their wings out, they looked perfectly content ( ... )

I second the large bathing dish. In the (mainly) outdoor aviary I work in (in NE Texas, so its hot here all the time), all of our birds have access to several cool bird baths as well as having the option to come inside into the AC. Most of our birds do fine and go back outside after cooling off for a couple of hours or so.

I took my two cockatiels out in the heat on a walk recently, but it was much too hot and I quickly came back in. Gideon was panting while Radio was fine, which I find curious (I wonder if their coloration differences - one dark, one light- has anything to do with it). I immediately sprayed Gideon with water mist, which he hates but I managed to get him in enough so he cooled down.

Galileo (normal grey) pants on walks on warm days. Static (cinnamon white face pearly pied) does not.
I'd say it's almost certainly related to color mutations. ;)

My Godson was wondering why Gal got hot, when Static didn't. I had him touch some cars while we walked back home. He discovered that the darker the car, the hotter they felt. It was a fun little science moment!

This is good info - I recently posted asking questions about the heat too. I am moving in 5 more days and may not have power/AC for 2 of those days. I will be in a mobile home, in the middle of a field on the prairie in KS and the temp is supposed to be 99-101. I am a little concerned and do not think I can keep them with me during this time. I may have to board them somewhere for a few days, which is going to be so stressful for them.
