Cage Shopping

I recently came to the realization that when I go into my fourth year clinical rotations next May, Jasper will probably be spending very little time out of his cage. It doesn't make me happy, and I'm sure he's not going to be thrilled about it either, but it's a fact that I'll be required to work 12 or more hour days and weekends. It's also a fact ( Read more... )

I think I've seen that cage in a local bird store, where it's housing a hyacinth macaw on each side. If that's the same cage, then it's *enormous*...unnecessarily large for even a giant amazon, and I think the bar spacing might be too big, too.
It's a nice cage, but huge.

fwiw, I have this cage for my ekkie: http://www.bird.com/item/split-level-house-cage-w-div42x26x60/533464/
the center divider is removed, she has the whole thing to herself and it's perfect for her. It would likely work great for a zon.

It would likely work great for most zons. The split-level cage (40 wide by 26 deep)is pretty much the same size as the cage he has now (37.5 wide by 27.5 deep) though.

I measured it out on my floor (with a tape and everything) and it's a size I'd like. His wingspan is just under two feet, and this is only one and a half that in depth, so that doesn't seem at all excessive. There are even bigger double macaws that are 80x40 inches. Maybe that's what the Hys are in?

The only advice I can give is to keep away from allpetfurniture. I ordered something they had 30+ stock of, supposedly, and then about a week later they emailed me back saying they were out and it was on back order. I canceled my order, and a week after THAT I haven't gotten my refund...indeed, it still says my cancelation is pending.

Besides that, best of luck in your cage hunt!

I bought a cage from them with no issue whatsoever.

As far as quality & ease in assembling I recommend Avian Adventures. It's not as large as what you are considering, but it's still a great cage. Good luck!

If I had to choose, I'd always take King's cages, though I've only had a SS cage from them, but it was unspeakably amazing.

Any of the above would probably be great though. However, one thing to consider -- a 40" by 40" cage might not be such a bad thing. I was astonished at how much the depth of my new cages made a difference in how much space is in the cage.

Seconding King's cages, I have 2 that are great. If you live remotely near NJ, go pick up the cage to save shipping.

Actually, the pickup thing goes for AE as well. The store Bird Paradise in NJ owns that line.

Too bad about pick-up, but I'm a west coast girl, all the way. :)
