And they provide food!

(actually, I wouldn't be adverse to having a couple of chickens, if I had some room)

Honestly, I like the things. I adopted some chicks that some idiot had gotten their kids for Easter this year. Then I got some more -- because I hadn't realized how many varieties and colors and sizes they came in and had 'oooh shiney'.

They're fun, they're sweet with some handling, they're not noisy, and they really are *super* friendly and entertaining. And they *don't* care if I'm not around and giving them intensive attention> They just chill with each other.

I wish I could have one where I live! My neighbors would vote me out of the neighborhood for sure though!

I've been trying to talk my boyfriend into letting me keep a couple chickens at his place though - I want the eggs and like you said, Chickens are awesome company.

I like this post a lot. :]

Here's hoping your boyfriend gives in. They really are awesome birds -- and eggs from happy chickens is definitely something that makes *me* happy (even if mine aren't old enough to lay quite yet).

Thanks!

I might also add that I have a very, very hands-on bird. Very few people think of macaws being cuddly, but Bailey is on me like velcro if she thinks I'll give her a good scratch. Her favorite spot to nap is in the crook of my neck. She's a big blue and yellow cockatoo. ;]

I love Bailey. LOVE Bailey.

My birds are all pretty hands off, cept the tiel. I'm okay with that, but I do love having a nice, solid, heavy bird the cats are afraid of to cuddle p with.

I keep dreaming of having a few hens someday. Since we're moving every few years and so many places have "livestock laws" in place, I can't do it yet, but I will. I'm well-convinced of the awesomeness of chickens already, but I always love hearing more. :)

Ever since I was excepted into UC Davis I was converted by the pollo. I can't wait to get one or two. I mean I love parrots, but chickens are so much more entertaining to me.

Parrots are AWESOME but chickens are just hysterical. And I have to admit I love the 'won't poop in the nest' thing they've got going on. Mostly because my bed = Nest. Now when they lay eggs in my bed, I might have to complain. Meanwhile, it makes for great TV watching.

Sadly my early experiences with chickens have all been with EVIL chickens, so to this day I'm not comfortable with them, but your pictures are adorable.

My parents live in an area with few to no livestock laws (in fact, they have a horse on the property); it's up to individual HOAs, which their neighborhood doesn't have. Our immediate neighbors have kept chickens before as well as geese and had gifted us with the resulting eggs on a few occasion.

There are definitely some chickens with unfortunate socialization (pardon me while I try to be PC). There are also issues like broody hens and roosters who are trying to do flock protection adn some just plain old aggressive ones. Interestingly mY FIRST experience with chickens was my stupid ass redneck uncle who kept fighting roosters. I LOVED those birds, but they were um. Not good with others, to put it mildly, and I wouldn't recommend a rooster for someoen living in suburbia for sure.

One of our other neighbors had a rooster when I was very young. This is how my little sister and I learned that the whole "crowing at the crack of dawn" trope in children's animal books everywhere was grade-A bullshit. How about "crow whenever they damn well feel like it"? Much more accurate.

It wasn't even that near a neighbor either, those bastards are LOUD.

They are.

And my amazon? Now not only mimicks cockatoos screaming but roosters crowing. And my kids screaming ofr help. I love that bird. I know I love him because if I didn't I have fried HIM.
