An Entry So Wild And Untamed, No Title Is Brave Enough To Take It On

The French called it the "hot and cold shower" - though obviously they did that in French, which I can't speak. It was a reference to the purposely disjointed house style of their infamous Grand Guignol theatre, which staged an almost random selection of bawdy farces and gruesome tragedies in an effort to shock and startle the audience. I found ( Read more... )

There are adverts for the V for Vendetta film on the side of buses now, and for the first time I can remember, I am actually dreading a film being released.

I'm sorry to hear about the darker elements of your workplace.

You already know my thoughts about the horror genre, a genre I love but which has been kicked in the teeth far too often by those who hate it and those who profess to love it. By chance, my project to review films directed by Argento should be up and running by Saturday. Now there's a guy who knew how to do things effectively.

By the way, did you know Takashi Miike has a role in Hostel? I suppose it's like Cronenberg having a cameo in Jason X.

I think it's worrying that the horror release I'm most looking forward to is the Masters of Horror DVDs. Not because I think they won't be good - because it reminds me that all the truly great horror directors are getting old now and there seems to be no-one willing to take their place. I'll make an exception for Lucky McKee, who can't seem to get his films released these days, and Chris Cunningham, though he can't get his shit together for long enough to make a friggin' movie already ( ... )

I can take it in a gore comedy like Shaun of the Dead or an early Peter Jackson movie, it's when you have something like Cabin Fever that I get pissed off. A film that wants to reinvent the horror genre... with a load of references to old horror movies.

Hmmm, a horror version of Cookd & Bombd? I post on there fairly frequently (as Catalogue Trousers), and while it can sometimes become an annoyingly elitist "my-comedy's-better-than-yours" place to be, yes, there is a need for such a thing - and possibly in horror terms also. By the way, congratulations - you come across as an angrier Kim Newman in your horror comments, and considering how much I respect Newman himself that's no bad thing ( ... )

Ah, I love Kim Newman too! I love his quote about Troma movies - basically that they know they have no hope in hell of ever making a good film, so they put some rubbish jokes in and say "no, no, it's a cult movie!" And his Video Dungeon is always a delight to read, even though I suspect he no longer watches them on video.

I often lurk around cookdandbombd - I used to post there, but I was worn down by the grating elitism of it all. I'm not sure I'd like to go back, but I find myself agreeing with them a frightening percentage of the time now. Only a few times where I've wanted to gnaw through wood in irritation these days.

As for V For Vendetta... mmmpfh. Usually I'm massively scornful of the people who say something (Harry Potter, James Bond, take your pick) has to be "British", since everyone knows those movies would never get made without American money. But V For Vendetta is like The Daily Show - if you're not up on the culture and politics of its country of origin, you're not going to get anything out of it. All the ( ... )

"In fact, I think the ideal V would surely be broadcast over four to six weeks on BBC One."

Hmmm. In a sort-of Edge Of Darkness stylee. I could quite go that.

However, my dream V would be made in the manner of Euston Films drama from the 70s. Imagine it done with that grimy, seedy look that you find in the likes of Fox, Widows and of course - most pertinently - The Sweeney.

And with no irony whatsoever.

Screen it late on Friday nights on ITV, and enjoy.

Ah, if only. Oh well. England Prevails and all that jazz.
