I turned on the radio the other morning and Davina McCall was playing what she thought was the best song about unrequited love ever written - can't remember what it was, I think it was by Bonnie Raitt. Anyway, as it ended, she whispered "Are you alright? You're going to be OK, aren't you?And in that moment I got a very genuine feeling of what it ( Read more... )

You would have thought, given the whole doom-and-gloom of PSB's catalogue, you'd have plenty of choice with this one. But you don't- there are lots of songs about splitting up, but not unrequited love.

A Red Letter Day is good, but not really in top tier territory.

On the other hand, there's a wonderful short song of theirs about unrequited lust, called Later Tonight -

That boy never cast a look in your direction
never tried to hook for your affection
dresses like the mod of your invention, tall and proud
He is the head boy of a school of thought
that plays in your intentions, night and day

And you wait 'til later
'til later tonight
You wait 'til later, 'til later
'til later tonight
'cause tonight always comes...They've called this one of the gayest songs they've ever written, but nobody noticed at the time. The piece is mainly accompanied by a paino, and is rather slow and lingering, emphasising the regret of the protagonist. I always get the feeling when listening to it that the protagonist doesn't really just want quick sex, ( ... )

This is what perplexed me - I thought that it would be really easy to rattle off a hundred songs about unrequited love, in the same way that once you're given a popular topic like drugs or break-ups you can just keep going and never stop. But I'm having real difficulty thinking of unrequited love songs.

I'll throw those on a pile with 'I'm Waiting For The Day' by the Beach Boys and 'Waltz No. 2' by Elliott Smith. There must be some Quasi songs about this too, they're right miserable bastards.

Ooh! Ooh! 'Creep' by Radiohead!

Hmm, I see your point. Also consider 'Toxic Girl' by the Kings of Convenience. And 'Girl Dreams' by Beck, too.
