The threads Himchan found himself tangled in were not quite sticky, but they managed to hold him tightly. He flexed his arms, but found he couldn’t move very much and certainly not very fair. He was secured against a wall, though he wasn’t sure, as it felt almost warm.
The last thing he remembered was descending into the cave. He was going by himself, all of his friends backed out for various reasons. Considering his predicament, he was beginning to see the wisdom in their choices. He’d picked this cave because, if he was honest with himself, he wanted to do it because he liked being reckless. Apparently he should’ve done more research or, perhaps, chosen not to go alone, but it was too late now.
He craned his neck, the threads (it felt almost like a web, really) were looser now, and looked around. There was light filtering in, though he couldn’t identify the source. The light was bluish, so it wasn’t the sun. If only he could reach his phone. He knew it was in his pocket, he felt it digging into his thigh. But although the threads were looser, it wasn’t enough.
Before he had a chance to think of a plan, a noise startled him. He turned as best he could, but saw nothing. The noise, it sounded like footsteps, got closer until the bluish light was blocked. When it finally came into view, Himchan gasped. It was a spider, a very, very big spider.
It sat in front of him, watching. He struggled, trying to get free, until he realized he was just like a fly. He wondered what the spider thought of him. It was, after all, bigger than he was. He stopped struggling, tired, and sagged in what most certainly was a web. He was just about to try to tug an arm free when he hear a voice.
“So, you’re alive after all.”
Himchan started. “What?”
“I was starting to worry. They say humans don’t like being tied up, but I was afraid you were dead.”
Himchan swore the spider spoke, but that couldn’t be. Spiders didn’t talk - except he’d also never known spiders to get quite so big, so maybe anything’s possible.
“You fell.” The spider said, not unkindly.
“I fell?”
The spider nodded. “I’ve bound your leg as best I can, but you’ll need a human to help you.”
It was then that Himchan realized that his leg hurt. He started to struggle, overcome with panic, until the spider approached.
“No, stop. You’ll make it worse.”
Himchan stopped, watching as the spider gently freed him. He tried to stand, but it was no use. He reached for his phone, but it had no signal. Then, without speaking, the spider gently picked him up and carried him toward the entrance of the cave.
It was sunny and warm. He turned to thank her, but she was gone. The only evidence she’d even existed was the neatly tied wrappings on his leg.
