PREVIOUS CHAPTER "Hey Luke, I am going to have a drink with a friend in Metro, do you want to join us?", I wrote on my phone and pushed "send".
I saw that he read the message but he didn't respond. What had I been thinking pushing the issue like this? What was my goal seeing him? It was Casey who had challenged me to do this but deep down it was something I wanted to do so bad, I wanted to see Edward again.
"I know you have read my message and I am okay about you not responding, it was a challenge I had with my friend to be honest, he only wanted to go out and meet the girl of his dreams if I invited you. Maybe you can tell that I have had a beer too many, sorry for disturbing your night".
When I didn't get an answer I put away my phone. "He doesn't want to see me", I said to Casey. "But we are going to that bar and drink something, you are having a date and I can't wait to talk to her".
Casey put his face in his hands. "You so fucked this up for me", he sighed. "I can't say no anymore so I have to explain what you said to Maddie earlier. Why do you put me on the spot like this? And what was that about her thinking that I am gay? Do I look gay?".
I smirked. "Maybe all the time you spend on keeping your image as a hipster makes that she thinks you like guys, I don't know. You started to kiss me a while ago, that doesn't make you very straight either I guess. But anyway, what does a gay look like in your opinion? Do I look gay? This is a weird subject to talk about".
"Yeah sorry Reid, I am not someone who thinks in stereotypes, you know that, it's more that she shocked me with that remark. And I wouldn't have cared less if someone else said that to me but Maddie? I want her to think of me as a catch".
"Then you have to come with me to the bar and talk to her", I said. "She is single and she accepted my invitation so she must think you are a catch, otherwise she would have said no. Just take a deep breath and don't drink more, you need to be a kind of sober when you talk to her".
I had never been to Metro but it was a bar like all the others, with music I didn't like playing so loud that I had to scream to Casey to be heard. We sat down on a couch and I ordered a coffee for us to get Casey a bit more awake. While we were gazing at the door waiting for Maddie I got the shock of my life: Edward came in.
I inhaled deeply and cursed loudly while I froze on the spot: what was I to do? Should I go to him and invite him at our couch?
Casey asked me what was wrong but I couldn't speak, I just panicked and looked at the door. When our eyes met I saw the hesitation in his eyes and that gave me a boost. "It's Edward", I said.
Casey turned to the entrance and cursed next to me. "Holy fuck, is that your Edward?", he yelled.
I just nodded.
"This is so weird Reid", he said in my ear. "It's Luke, I know him very well and he has been my basketball coach a I have never known that he was a ....".
I turned to him and stared at him. "If you ever call him that then we will no longer be friends", I said. "No one knows that so I want you to forget what I have told you about him. He is my....kinda date so respect him like I do".
Casey smiled. "Of course I will Reid, don get so upset man, I will never say a thing about it but it's weird that I have known your love-interest all my life. He seems a little out of his comfort zone, why don't you walk to him and invite him over?".
"Shut the hell up Casey", I said pissed. "Who is talking about a love-interest? You know our dilemma so you know it's not going to go somewhere".
"Yeah well, think what you want but you are boring me with stories about him being so good and sweet for so long now, that's not someone you just like to see. You have it so bad for him man and now he has accepted your invitation, that means something, doesn't it? Go get him".
I stood up and walked to the guy who locked my gaze. "Hi", I said when I was close to him.
"Hey", he said so softly that I only got it because I read his lips. "I have to go Reid; you are here with Casey and I.....".
"Come and sit with us Edward", I said. "Sorry, Luke. He knows everything about us, and about you. He is my best friend and I have told him everything. He won't tell a soul about your work".
Luke turned paler than he already was. "He knows about my gigolo time?", he asked softly.
"Yes", I said. "I have been talking about you a lot, I had to share it with someone Luke", I said. "It was such a special night to me and it's so special that you are here right now, please come and sit with us".
Luke didn't move so for a second I didn't know what to do. I looked at Casey who read the confusion very well and came our way. He smiled and took Luke in his arms like a long lost friend.
"Hey Luke, it's so good to see you again, how have you been? I didn't know you stayed in Oakdale, why didn't you call me; we could have gone out or something. When you left as our coach the whole team fell apart, it was such a shame".
He put his arm around Luke's shoulder and pushed him to the couch where he sat down next to him. The only place for me was next to Luke on his other side.
"What are you drinking?", Luke asked looking at out mugs.
"Coffee I said, we’ve had dinner with too much beer so we wanted to sober up. Casey here is expecting someone so I thought it would be good for him to have a decent conversation with her. Have you eaten yet or do you want to order something?".
Casey smirked at me. "Stop babbling Reid", he said. "Drink your coffee and take a deep breath, Luke and I have to catch up anyway".
Luke blushed and turned to Casey. "How do you know each other?", he asked.
"Reid works in the hospital where we met at a BBQ. He came on to me but I wasn't interested but we talked all night and are friends since then. Reid helped me into nursing school; he is really a warm fuzzy guy if you get to know him".
"That's great Casey", Luke said. "And that all happened after you came out of prison?".
"Prison?", I asked.
"You didn't tell him?", Luke asked amused.
Casey shook his head. "No, I never talk about it anymore; I don't even think about it, it's something I want to forget Luke".
Luke looked embarrassed. "Sorry for bringing it up", he said. "Guess we all have our secrets we try to hide. Not that I am ashamed of what I did but I think most people won't understand why I did it".
Casey made a zip gesture on his lips. "I won't tell a soul Luke", he said. "It's so good to see you again, maybe you can join us at our running sessions, Reid and I go for a run two times a week before work. We have a lot to talk about".
While the two old friends were catching up I saw Maddie enter the club. She walked our way and looked surprised when she saw my semi-date. "Hey", she said, "it's great to see you again Luke".
Luke stood up and hugged her. "Maddie", he said, "It's so good to see you again! How have you been?".
I sat there all quite watching Luke socialize. He and Maddie turned out to be best friends in high school and later on OU when they had literature classes together.
"Are you joining us or do you have a date?", Luke asked.
"Yes I can join you because Doctor Oliver asked me to come here", she said.
Luke shook his head. "You have a date with Reid?", he asked confused.
Maddie smiled. "No, I believe that he tried to set me up with Casey", she said.
"So you like them young", Luke smirked. "Do you know each other already or do I have to introduce you?".
Casey finally started to talk. "Maybe we can go and sit there at a table Maddie", he said. "That way we can let Reid enjoy his date and we can get to know each other".
Maddie looked surprised for a minute before she stared to talk. "But doctor Oliver, you said that you had a date who didn't want to have......you meant Luke?".
Man, could this night go worse? "It's not a real date, just us catching up", I said.
"What was she going to say", Luke asked a little pissed. "What did you tell all these people about me? Have you ever heard of the concept privacy? What the fuck Reid".
I stood up and pulled Luke from the couch. "You and I are going outside and have a good talk", I said. "I can't concentrate in this noise and there are too many distractions".
At first Luke resisted but I didn't let go of his hand, I held it and walked outside with my hand in his. I had to talk to him face to face to see why he was here, and I was sure he wanted to know things from me. For example why I told a waitress I didn't know that he didn't want to have sex.
