PREVIOUS CHAPTER
"Are you awake?", I heard him ask.
"Hhmm-mm", was all I could produce.
"Because when you want to sleep we are going home Reid", he said.
"I am perfectly fine here Luke", I said and it was true, I loved to listen to his voice with my eyes closed, my heart was so peaceful even though he was talking to Noah about their past.
After what had happened tonight I couldn't be surer about our future. Noah was not a threat, Luke knew what he wanted and that was me. The champagne he had brought was superior and now I was floating on cloud 9 lying on his ex-couch. I caressed his short new haircut with one hand slowly while I tried to digest what had happened.
"So you are moving in with Reid?", Noah asked.
"Yes, in time, we have to discuss how we are going to do it but I will, Reid asked me and I have been thinking about it a lot. He bought me a little pig Noah. We are going to build fences so Reid's horse can stay with us. It's scary to step into something like this again but I can't let fear control my life anymore, I have to learn to have faith in life".
"Where has the old Luke gone? Noah asked softly.
"He is slowly withdrawing and I am grateful for that Noah. I was on my way to a heart attack, I was always stressed, I was constantly fighting my way through problems and I don't want that anymore. I am at my happiest when I am sitting in Reid's rocking chair on his porch looking out on the fields. I want to come home to a place that's ours, where I can unwind".
I couldn't keep my mouth shut any longer. "Tell me Noah, who was the old Luke? When did you guys meet?".
Luke caressed my leg and leaned his head against my chest. "You want to do this now Reid?", he asked.
"Yes Luke, your past is a part of your life so I want to get to know it. And maybe Noah had a different version of it than you, I am curious. Noah, I understand Luke's concern because he knows that I have had nightmares about you but after tonight I know that they will be over. So this is the time to open up Luke, I can handle it; I want to know who the young Luke was.
I looked at Noah and saw that it was hard for him to talk about it. "Or, maybe we could do this another time, I don't want to throw salt in any wound Noah, I just...".
Noah shook his head and tried to smile. "I am sorry that I caused you nightmares Reid", he said softly. "I can understand that you had a hard time dealing with Luke and me because we had unfinished business. In a way it was convenient for him to hang on here, to live my life as if nothing had changed.
Luke and I met at Java where I started to work as a barista when I was a student. I had a girlfriend at the time and Luke had a guy-crush but slowly we grew closer. He had a lot of problems with his family and his grandmother, his safe haven had died, so he was kinda floating I guess. So was I, I had no idea who I was.
Luke came to Java a lot and helped me to clean the place after closing time. I had my own family stuff going on so I guess we understood what the other was going through. And then, one night, he said he could bring me home with his car. No one had a car but he did, it was obvious that he was rich but he didn't act on it, it was an old Toyota.
So sitting in his car with the radio on, in the dark we talked about things that students go through and suddenly an idea rushed through my head: I want to kiss him. It was weird that I wasn't scared; I just leaned in and kissed him on his lips. That moment was life-changing for me; I knew that I was gay right there and then, it was so much better to kiss a guy".
Luke smirked. "O man, I was so naïve then, I had no idea that Noah was doubting, I didn't see it coming so when he kissed me I pushed him away and asked him to leave. He did but the seed was planted, and after a few months of confusion he came to my house and told me he thought he was gay".
"Have you always known Luke?" I asked. "That you were gay?".
I felt his head nod against my chest. "Yes I have Reid, and you?".
"Me too", I said. "Since I was 9 years old I knew that I was different from my friends at school and I never have had any trouble because of it".
Noah sighed. "In my family it was a problem, that's why I kept it a secret but when I met Luke who was out so openly and proudly I saw that it could be possible to live a gay life. Luke was my role-model in a way".
We sat in complete silence for a while; each thinking about our own past. It was wonderful to hear Luke talk about it and I knew I had to start telling him about mine. It would be a challenge to go back to that time but it was good to share this with each other. In private, when we would be at our house.
Luke was an inspiration to me, the way he handled his past was a start for me to find my own closure. I knew I wanted to go visit my brother but I postponed it for months now. With Luke at my side I could handle seeing Harold again. Luke was right the other day, I was living my dreams and the things I envisioned when I was in Dallas were becoming a reality. It was even better than I could have expected because I had found him, my lover.
