Minneapolis bike folk-- help?

I have 3 bikes in my garage(I have no idea what kind or specs they are- one is definitely really old and klunky, one is newer and more up to date), but I would like to get one of them up and running

Is there a particular kind? Can I just buy a cheapy used one from recycled sports store? (I don't have hygiene issues with that-- my derby helmet was used.)
