Shelke waited for Cid's ranting to cease, waiting to hear his verbal confirmation that he would be making the detour asked of him. She didn't understand him per se, not the way Shera did, that he was all bristles and tough talk but on the inside he was just a big marshmallow of a man. (Sometimes Shera liked to call him her little prickly pear behind his back.)

"His name is Zack Fair. Now ending transmission.Shera waited for the transmission to cut off before she stood and brushed a parting kiss on one endearingly scruffy cheek, giving his shoulder a grateful squeeze. As she grew older and now found herself beginning her thirties, she could feel the side of her that wanted to nurture life and protect it growing ever stronger, and the sheer thought of one of Cloud's friends wounded and needing help spurred her to action ( ... )

Zack Fair? The hell was so familiar about that damn name? Well, at least Shera was already moving her ass, and if the crew had any sense about them they would be doing the same. Grunting out of irritation at the kiss, he turned to grab his tea, drinking the rest down in one gulp and setting the cup back on the table.

"Don't have time for that shit, Shera, we're getting this thing in the damn air," he said in response to her offer, taking off after her, shuffling along stray crew as he saw them running about. "God damnit, take your damn posts, you weren't born fuckin' yesterday!"

Even with all the hustle and bustle, it didn't take long to get the Shera in the air. Taking the wheel, Cid turned her southward toward Gongaga, telling them to keep a nice, medium speed. Place wasn't too far away, and it'd be a hell of a job spotting the fucker, wouldn't it?

Heavy was the first word that came to mind. Everything felt so heavy, his head, his legs, his arms, all the way to the tips of his fingers. Even his eyelids, which he only managed to open briefly before they closed once more and his exhausted, heavy body fell back against the ground ( ... )

Shera had sneaked herself into their ship's version of a crow's nest, a room in the belly of the ship equipped with optical telescopes for physical identification when sonar simply wasn't enough. She did it partly out of impatience and partly out of inability to simply idle while the ship made landing preparations when there was someone in need of assistance on the ground. She was hoping to visually assess him so that she would be ready the moment the ship touched down.

What she saw broke her heart in ways she had not known since the Geostigma outbreak however many years ago, the sight of Zack laying prone on the ground, so deathly pale and bloody and so exhausted the boy didn't even seem to have the strength to move. She let out a quiet gasp of horror, hand going to her chest. Then she turned from the crow's nest and ran back up the stairs to the medical wing immediately, fetching one of their medics to assist her as the ship finally made port ( ... )
