Het ship names in SGA all seem to be really stupid. Really, if it's not something that rolls easily off the tongue and leaves a clear indication of who is involved in the pairing, you're really better off just writing out names
( Read more... )
I don't generally like ship names at all. I like McShep because it sounds neat, and Porne because it's the most awesome ship name ever. Otherwise, I just use the abbreviations (like B/J, which I reckon is also a nice, porny ship name).
Sparky is, to me, totally off the mark anyway because I've never seen any sparks there. Sure, every once in a while Elizabeth showed a bit of a crush on John, but I never saw anything going the other way. They always seemed to be too familial for romance. But then I think the same thing about John and Teyla when others don't, so *shrugs*
Yeah, McKay/Anyone is a lot easier to sell, although I'd probably laugh at McEmmagan since it's kind of long.
Porne is the most awesome ship name, and it's the example I use for non-fandom people (which generally scares them, but *I* have fun).
I had never heard of meshing up names until I had been in fandom for a at least a year. I know a couple people used the term Temmett for Ted/Emmett, but I always just stuck with B/J. Although I have heard some of the new QaF fandom refer to them as Brustin, and I want to cry every single time. :(
Sparky is, to me, totally off the mark anyway because I've never seen any sparks there. Huh, I never thought about that being where they got their name from. Personally I just think of the Firefighting Dalmation that shows up at schools and parades to tell kids to be careful around fires
( ... )
I only know about Sparky because someone else had asked about it, and that's what the shippers said.
Anyone who uses Brustin needs to be beaten to death. Seriously.
I can't read John with anyone else, either. I tried a few times to read John/Ronon and John/Lorne, because I love Ronon and Lorne, but they just didn't click for me. While I can see Rodney being more sexually available than John, I'm also not that interested in reading Rodney/not-John because, well, they're not John. :P Now, I can read threesome fics with John/Rodney/someone hot, as long as the bulk of the emotional content is between John and Rodney. One of my favorite fics was John/Rodney/Lorne/Parrish. *gets lost in the visual*
I only know about Sparky because someone else had asked about it, and that's what the shippers said. That... is the stupidest reason for giving a crappy name to a pairing ever. That reasoning could be applied to pretty much any ship! (since most people base a ship off of *something*). *shakes head*
Anyone who uses Brustin needs to be beaten to death. Seriously. Seriously. B/J is perfectly nice, easier to say, doesn't sound as stupid, and has nice implications (I have a wall paper of that B/J scene where Justin spits on the Stockwell poster that says "B/j: Brian/Justing (what *else* did you think it stood for) or something cute like that. I had never picked up on it before that).
I can't read John with anyone else, either. I tried a few times to read John/Ronon and John/Lorne, because I love Ronon and Lorne, but they just didn't click for me. Yeah, I don't actually care for John's character all that much. And he shows the most personality around Rodney, so I find it hard to read him with anyone else.
lol - the Sparky thing? Is actually kind of funny, apparently a few people started calling it that to make fun of stupid mash up names. And then uh, people actually started using it. And they thought it was funny, so no one stopped them. Except now people don't know the origins and just think it's some stupid name people actually thought sounded cool =P
Same with Spanky, it was in retaliation to Sparky. "If they have Sparky, we want something equally stupid!" Kind of thing.
Whereas I am anti name mashing up. I think it's stupid. Unless you're calling Jennifer Garner/Ben Affleck Bennifer Squared. Then it's funny (to me at least).
Yeah, I knew Spanky was done because of Sparky, but the origins of Sparky just make it suck even more. That's such a stupid name (do you now think of the dog?).
I actually don't mind the mashing of names, so long as it's easy to say and you can tell who they're talking about. Like Sharter? Totally had me scratching my head. If you're in the fandom, and have no idea who the hell they're talking about? It's not a good name. Also, if you can't say it out loud? It also shouldn't be used.
