Het ship names in SGA all seem to be really stupid. Really, if it's not something that rolls easily off the tongue and leaves a clear indication of who is involved in the pairing, you're really better off just writing out names
( Read more... )
Yeah, McKay/Anyone is a lot easier to sell, although I'd probably laugh at McEmmagan since it's kind of long.
Porne is the most awesome ship name, and it's the example I use for non-fandom people (which generally scares them, but *I* have fun).
I had never heard of meshing up names until I had been in fandom for a at least a year. I know a couple people used the term Temmett for Ted/Emmett, but I always just stuck with B/J. Although I have heard some of the new QaF fandom refer to them as Brustin, and I want to cry every single time. :(
Sparky is, to me, totally off the mark anyway because I've never seen any sparks there. Huh, I never thought about that being where they got their name from. Personally I just think of the Firefighting Dalmation that shows up at schools and parades to tell kids to be careful around fires. The first time I heard the term was in an e-mail from a Yahoo group from a John/Elizabeth fan saying how she hated the term, because it sounded so childish, and those two are both leaders and much too mature for such a name.
And you don't have to bother trying to talk *me* out of Sheppard pairings. The *only* person I'll ever read John in a relationship with is Rodney. Sometimes Rodney and Carson, but that's about it. I personally think he'd drive Elizabeth crazy because they'd have trouble working together afterwards, and she'd take it a lot more personally when he disobeyed her orders. And while I think Teyla showed an initial spark of interest in John, she soon realized that he's a huge dork, and now treats him like a brother whom she sometimes has to remember isn't still a child (even if he acts like it).
I only know about Sparky because someone else had asked about it, and that's what the shippers said.
Anyone who uses Brustin needs to be beaten to death. Seriously.
I can't read John with anyone else, either. I tried a few times to read John/Ronon and John/Lorne, because I love Ronon and Lorne, but they just didn't click for me. While I can see Rodney being more sexually available than John, I'm also not that interested in reading Rodney/not-John because, well, they're not John. :P Now, I can read threesome fics with John/Rodney/someone hot, as long as the bulk of the emotional content is between John and Rodney. One of my favorite fics was John/Rodney/Lorne/Parrish. *gets lost in the visual*
I only know about Sparky because someone else had asked about it, and that's what the shippers said. That... is the stupidest reason for giving a crappy name to a pairing ever. That reasoning could be applied to pretty much any ship! (since most people base a ship off of *something*). *shakes head*
Anyone who uses Brustin needs to be beaten to death. Seriously. Seriously. B/J is perfectly nice, easier to say, doesn't sound as stupid, and has nice implications (I have a wall paper of that B/J scene where Justin spits on the Stockwell poster that says "B/j: Brian/Justing (what *else* did you think it stood for) or something cute like that. I had never picked up on it before that).
I can't read John with anyone else, either. I tried a few times to read John/Ronon and John/Lorne, because I love Ronon and Lorne, but they just didn't click for me. Yeah, I don't actually care for John's character all that much. And he shows the most personality around Rodney, so I find it hard to read him with anyone else.
While I can see Rodney being more sexually available than John, I'm also not that interested in reading Rodney/not-John because, well, they're not John. :P When I first got into SGA, I steadfastly refused to read McShep. There was no way I'd get sucked into *that* pairing. It was McBeck all the way for me. But there just weren't all that many McBeck fics, and my best friend tempted me with totally awesome McBeckShep fics (Ha! That was used just because, I totally don't call them that normally). Then she sent me a ton of the best McShep fics of the time... and well, I was lost from there on.
I can read threesome fics with John/Rodney/someone hot, as long as the bulk of the emotional content is between John and Rodney. Actually threesomes that are CharacterA/CharacterB+CharacterC don't interest me all that much. I've read it a few times, but I much prefer A/B/C. So many fics can't get that down right, the equal relationship, and so it's incredibly rare and special when you are able to find one. Actually, I've only read 2 that I've been happy with, and they've both been in the SGA fandom Back from the Well by xanthelj and Alone in Your Mind by James Walkswithwind (both are McKay/Sheppard/Beckett).
Is it just me, or have you noticed a surge of team OT4 fics recently?
