None of that escaped his sharp eyes, not the passion and not the confusion, nor the hesitation. The moment, his own tension had him involuntarily hyperfocussed on her every feature, the curve of her brows, the deep blue of her eyes, the barely noticable movements of her nostrils with breath.

There was no conceivable reason for his current actions, but it mattered not, didn't even enter his mind - she had his undivided attention, and he felt most aware in his palm and the undersides of his fingers, with which he was touching her.

Something was transpiring between them, and he couldn't for the life of him tell what - what it was supposed to be. It irritated him more than he wanted, and it was written in his face.

When she uttered her words to him, he gave a guffaw of a laugh; not loud, not intrusive, yet almost violent for one such as him. His tongue swiped along the backsides of his upper teeth before he answered: "Have we ever been anything else?"

Have they?

No.

Everything started by being caged and humiliated by Fate. That was their Alpha and their release would be their Omega. She hated gardens and the powerless reminder of their pathetic lifetimes of struggle. Unyielding will flared behind the cold layer of her blue eyes. She did not need to pay attention to his mannerisms to know him. Alexiel didn’t care for the details, and always saw the big picture they made.

There was something she wanted to say, but words failed to be uttered and that, above else, the frustration of not knowing what exactly.

“We will have to start over again,” was her response, not fighting against his grip. Why fought against him? “Until we can break out free from every cage.”

Ah, yes. That should be enough. By all means, it should be enough. She was right of course, again - and he didn't mind. It was the inevitable conclusion, as they'd both known for a long time. There was no other path for them; a decision made when he'd come back to take her out of her original cage, at the latest. This place would not change that.

Lucifer let go of Alexiel's arm, straightening his back until he stood before her in his full height again, his eyes focused on hers nonetheless. "That we will", he said simply.

He agreed and let her go, simply as that. Alexiel didn’t know why instead of relief, she felt disappointment. Of course, they would agree on this, but what was that was bothering her. She tried to conceal her feelings as she usually did. It even fooled him once or twice in the past, maybe she could still fool him again.

“I am attending to the gathering,” mentioned Alexiel, changing subjects, turning her head to glance at the direction of the music. “Out of two cages, I prefer to not be in a garden.”

So she tried to hide that last flicker of emotion, but Lucifer knew her better than that. That is to say, he couldn't determine what it was he'd gotten just the slightest glimpse of, he could merely tell she wasn't unaffected by this whole encounter. It gave him an odd feeling of satisfaction.

When she turned around, his eyes followed her gaze to where the other residents of Paradisa were having their Yule Ball. He knew the occasion, of course, they both did, though it hardly held importance to them. Jesus had not truly been the Messiah. It would have been Alexiel, he thought as he looked at her again, until she and Setsuna proved the world wrong. But that was a complicated matter he chose not to ponder upon right now. They had time.

"Hm", he said. "I'll go with you."
