cybernautical mode: The Disclaimer

The DisclaimerSince even if I use qualifiers, or if I don't, people still don't grasp that I'm usually talking about the behaviour of a certain group in a larger group, I'm just going to type up one big disclaimer for all the controversial topics I can think of and add more as I think of more ( Read more... )

rants, dread politics, pro-choice, women's issues, lj, humor, 9/11, history, life, fanfiction, religion, race issues, the disclaimer, hurricane season, girl stuff, i hate slash, food

I've got no problem with your beliefs.

I do admit that in the past you've ranted and I've brought up something that might be taken as "disagreeing" with you. I'll apologize now for that. I wasn't doing it to say, "You're wrong!" because you're not wrong. Everyone has a right to their opinions and very rarely are opinions wrong. I more bring it up to try to show how the other side might think.

And yeah, I do understand all your reasons for disliking religion. When I go walking at the park, every Sunday morning the church folks come and start pestering people with their literature.

I so want to tell them that if they can't stop because it's just obnoxious, they should stop trying to be salemen because God's word shouldn't be cheapened that way. "Selling God" makes it seem like God isn't something anyone really needs in their life, that they must make people think they need it. God's word and the love of Jesus is a precious gift. It's really hard to like a gift when someone comes up and crams it down your throat ( ... )

No, see, the thing is, I don't mind being disagreed with as long as a person does the disagreeing respectfully and politely. Which I have never in my recollection had a problem with you doing.

It's the people who take their disagreement and wear it as a wound and then a reason to attack me for having a POV they don't like I have a problem with.

Thank you; that's kind.

I was feeling frustrated because people were attacking me [in my perception] for these opinions, and for apparently lumping everybody together when i was under the impression I was making fairly clear which groups of people I was ranting about at any given moment.

I felt I had to in order to forestall some of the drama that comes from me being so opinionated.

Other people... I dunno, my opinion is that if someone can't handle my view, does not agree with me, dislikes me or whatever... screw 'em.

They can handle it or they can't. If the person can handle it (the concept that I have strong beleifs and I am sticking to my guns) cool.

If not... see ya.

I don't validate how I feel about myself by how many people like me or what-not. I know who my friends are and that's what matters to me. New friends I make are generally of this stripe as well.

If you've ever gone through my lj, particularly my Commute entries... It often is not a good day for me if I haven't gotten in a shouting match with some moronic driver that has no concept of what the bike lane is for.

..but I digress.. Why bother with a disclaimer at all? If someone does not like what you have to say and they can't accept your explanation.. drop them.

It's just that I got tired of having to explain myself to people who are fine with me on THIS subject but get really touchy with me on THAT subject .

I <3 you. And I agree with everything you've said in this post, and how you've said it :).

Thanks.

I do try to think stuff through and explain why I have whatever position I have.

Wow, just found this post.

Didn't realize you were anemic/meat-required. Me too! And I can't stand it when vegans try to say "oh you can get around that." No I can't, honest, I can point you to doctors who will agree, please just give me a steak. That's one of the weird sticking-points I'll actually get into fights over, just because so few people realize that this kind of thing exists.

Ahh. Nice to know I'm not alone, even though it's not a good thing we should be in the same boat for.

[How about gorgeous female multimillion dollar lottery winners, huh?]

And I eat other iron-containing foods, veggies, etc. I like them, even. But meat seems to be what my body likes most to absorb.

So that's what I eat when my body craves it. Particularly during Shark Week.

Regarding the slash..whatever stuff. Why tollerate it all? You can take legal recourse.

I would be royally p/oed if someone did that with something I was working on.

I recall something Larry Niven wrote about a similar issue. He found out about a person that was doing sadomasochistic porn stories featuring his Kzin race. (yea, the kitties tying up and raping the women) He threatened to sue the hell out of him and he backed off.

He was all for fanfic but that was too far for him.

You can't sue someone for doing something with your fan work.

But if people start slashing Kismetropolis? That's mine, and yes, I may very well do so.

Ah.. I did not understand.. there is a degree of separation then.. they are taking fanfic that a fan did of your work and then twisted THAT.

Still... they're your characters.
