I'm simply curious: why target someone already crippled, instead of someone who is an ACTUAL challenge?

Do you not grasp the challenge? Allow me to make it plain.

You can break an unbroken person. But when someone is broken, and broken again, it is about finding what they hold onto through it all. They are, perhaps, the strongest of us all in that regard, and pose the single greatest challenge to continue breaking.
