eighteenth labyrinth

[The afternoon finds Felix sitting on the edge of the fountain in town with his journal in his lap and a small box of other books at his feet. He seems to be lost in thought a moment, his chin tilted upward to feel the slight warmth of the sun in the early spring air.]

It is good to finally speak to you.

I can answer any questions. A council though...

You need not make your decision on that immediately, and I am more than willing to answer any questions you might have regarding that. It depends entirely on where your interests lie. The research will be long undertaking, involving cataloguing and classifying all the magic that residents here display. My goal is also to research the magic of the castle and any that is native to this world. If you're more the practical sort I also intend to form a small task for to help defend the residents and possibly implement some proper warding, but that is a long time off. For now, I'm just trying to figure out what I have to work with.

I suppose the first question I would ask you is what kind of magic do you have, and how do you channel it?

Research is what I do best...

My system of magic is an elemental style consisting of fire, water, earth, wood, metal, sun and moon. I can additionally combine multiple elements to create more effects. My magic is combination of my innate power, spells that I have learned or researched, and a focus known as a "spell card".

Hmmm. How is your innate magic different from spells that you learned? My own perception is that spells are simply ways of giving shape and purpose to the power we already have. Would you say that is true for you, or do they spells of themselves have power?

I could maybe go for that. What does your council do?

Not a whole lot, as of yet, but the goal is to research all the types of magic here in Paradisa; both that of residents and that which is native to this world.

And do what with the research?

Quite a lot. The first goal is to keep a detailed catalogue of all magic-using residents and a list of what they can do. In the event that the castle or some other influence makes them hostile, we would have the information to counter them. There is such a wide variety magic here. It has made me wonder if indeed all magic is the same, or merely the method and ability to channel it. Or are some types really different? If we know this, we might be able to combine techniques. On the practical end this would hopefully lead to implementing castle-wide wards to help keep the residents safe. There is also the matter of native magic - the origin of the Dead Zone, the magic of the castle, the magic of native people like Flora. If we understood those things, it may put us a step closer to mastering our own destinies here.

[Draco walks past chewing on a sugar quill as he leafs through his notes before stopping and seeing Felix. ]

You know it's not going to move no matter how much you stare at it.

[Felix gives a start, not having noticed Draco approaching.]

Oh. Hello Draco. [he smiles] I actually wasn't expecting it to move. Merely...contemplating some things about the nature of magic.

By staring at a stone fountain?

[Smile] Not the fountain. The water.
